    • An impact pad (20), formed from a refractory material capable of withstanding contact with molten metal, comprises a base (12) serving in use as an impact surface for molten metal, and a sidewall (14) extending generally upwardly therefrom. The sidewall (14) terminates at an upper surface (16) which is above the base (12) in use such that the base (12) and sidewall (14) define a receptacle for receiving molten metal. The sidewall (14) contains therein at least one channel (22), the at least one channel (22) having first and second ends (24, 26); the first end (24) being relatively closer to the base (12) at its intersection with the sidewall (14) than the second end (26). The at least one channel (22) being open ended at the second end (26) or tapering such that the at least one channel (22) has zero depth at its second end (26). The invention also relates to a tundish including an (15) impact pad (20) as described above.

    • An impact pad (30) for metallurgical processes is formed from refractory material, and contains a base (31) having an impact surface (32) facing upwardly against a stream of molten metal entering a vessel containing the impact pad. A wall (34) having a plurality of adjacent wall portions (36, 38) extends upwardly from the base (31). The impact surface (32) contains at least one nonhorizontal facet extending inwardly from a wall portion (36, 38); all lines in the facet extending perpendicularly to the wall portion have an inclination or declination with respect to the horizontal plane.

    • An unmanned, towable aerovehicle is described and includes a container to hold cargo, an autogyro assembly connected to the container and to provide flight characteristics, and a controller to control operation the autogyro assembly for unmanned flight. The container includes a connection to connect to a powered aircraft to provide forward motive force to power the autogyro assembly. In an example, the autogyro assembly includes a mast extending from the container, a rotatable hub on an end of the mast, and a plurality of blades connected to the hub for rotation to provide lift to the vehicle. In an example, an electrical motor rotates the blades prior to lift off to assist in take off. The electrical motor does not have enough power to sustain flight of the vehicle.
