    • A vertical shaft reactor assembly is disclosed that comprises a reactor including an elongate shaft and an attached head comprising a fluid inlet, an effluent outlet and a head. The shaft comprises a vertical slow-flow zone having first and second ends, and at least one vertical fast-flow zone adjacent to said slow-flow zone and having first and second ends. The first ends are in direct fluid communication with each other, and the second ends are in indirect fluid communication with each other through the head. The reactor further includes a gas-liquid injection assembly adjacent to and in fluid communication with the fast-flow zone. The reactor assembly further includes a radiation source. The reactor assembly also includes a reactant enrichment chamber in fluid communication with said injection assembly and a reactant supply source.

    • A hydrogen production process is disclosed that includes (a) mixing together at least one species of microorganism and a liquid nutrient medium lacking a carbon source, to form a mixed liquor solids suspension (MLSS); (b) photoactivating a metabolic pathway in the microorganism; (c) incubating a stream of the resulting activated MLSS in the absence of light, and without a carbon source, to obtain a first stream comprising a CO-starved activated MLSS flowing at a first flow rate; (d) saturating a liquid stream with a CO-containing gas, to form a CO-saturated stream; (e) incubating, in the absence of light, a second stream comprising the CO-saturated stream and at least a main portion of the first stream; and (f) forming from the second stream H2 and CO2 products and a stream of CO-depleted MLSS.

    • The embodiments disclosed herein present a system and a method of reducing carbon dioxide emitted by a carbon dioxide producing process, for example, by converting carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and/or to carbon monoxide and oxygen. One embodiment of the invention discloses a fermentation system, comprising a fermentation bioreactor; a carbon dioxide absorption chamber configured to receive gaseous products from said fermentation bioreactor, wherein said gaseous products contain carbon dioxide; and a separation system in fluid communication with said bioreactor and said absorption chamber. In some cases, the fermentation bioreactor is a deep shaft reactor. In some cases, the carbon dioxide absorption chamber is a deep shaft reactor. A further embodiment of the invention discloses a fermentation system, comprising a pressurizable fermentation bioreactor; and a separation system in fluid communication with said pressurizable fermentation bioreactor. In some cases, the pressurizable fermentation bioreactor is a deep shaft reactor.
