    • A magnetic head lifting device of a magneto-optical recorder and/or reproducer which uses a disc cartridge in which a magneto-optical disc is housed. The magnetic head lifting device has a magnetic head lift driving mechanism which moves a magnetic head to a position higher than an upper position at which is a holder which is movable between the upper position where the disc cartridge is loaded or ejected and a lower position where information signals are recorded on and/or reproduced from the magneto-optical disc in the cartridge. When the disc cartridge is inserted/withdrawn into/from the holder, the touch between the disc cartridge and the magnetic head is avoided to protect the magnetic head. The distance that the magnetic head moves between the position at which the information signal is recorded and the position at which the information signal is not recorded is small and therefore the magneto-optical recorder and/or reproducer is thin.
