    • Luminaires (10) for illuminating a target zone (13) having target zone subregions in front of and to the sides of the luminaire. The luminaire includes a housing (17), a lamp holder (13) in the housing positioned to support an electric lamp (19) in a generally vertical orientation, and a compound parabolic reflector (11) in the housing partially surrounding a lamp light-emitting segment (47) location having plural regions (51, 53, 55). Preferred forms of the compound parabolic reflector include segmented center (59) and side portions (61, 63). The preferred segmented center portion has a first plurality of two-dimensional parabolic segments (73, 75, 77) each of which has a focal point (79, 81, 83) in a different one of the plural light-emitting segment location regions. The preferred segmented side portions are each provided with a second plurality of two-dimensional parabolic segments (101-131) having focal points (138) along the light-emitting segment location. The parabolic segments are effective to direct a preponderance of light toward the target zone subregions.

    • The improved bollard luminaire (10) has an upwardly directed, elliptical main reflector (13) and a lamp (17) "nested" within the reflector (13) and positioned at or near its lower focal point (25). An upper cone-shaped reflector (19) receives light from the main reflector (13) and directs it laterally through a transparent lens element (45). The element (45) provides a 360 DEG lateral light opening (11) unobstructed by wiring, support posts or the like. Light reflected through the opening (11) is relatively sharply focused along an axis about 70 DEG from vertical axis (21). Unreflected light from the lamp (17) which "misses" both reflectors (13, 19) also provides a degree of "uplighting", often found useful for aesthetic purposes.
