    • A transmitter for transmitting at least a first and a second main signal component (L+R) is disclosed, having at least two input terminals (1, 90) for receiving the at least two input signals. The transmitter comprises multiplexer means (111') for multiplexing the at least two inputs signals to a first input (11') of matrixing means (13'), and to an input of first bitrate reducing means (BRR1). The first bitrate reducing means is for carrying out a data reduction step on the signal applied to its input and to supply a data reduced version to an output. Expansion means (7') are present, having an input coupled to the first bitrate reducing means (BRR1), for carrying out a data expansion on the data information applied to its input, so as to obtain a replica of the signal applied to the input of the bitrate reducing means at an output. Said output is coupled to a second input (12') of the matrixing means (13'). An output (14') of the matrixing means (13') is coupled to signal combination means (29) via second bitrate reducing means (BRR2). The output of the first bitrate reducing means (BRR1) is also coupled to the combination means (29). The signal combination means (29) is adapted to combine the signals so as to enable the transmission of those output signals. Conversion means (SPL2, SPL3) are provided between the input terminals (1, 90) and the inputs of the multiplexer means (111') for converting the input singals into corresponding subsignals, such as subband signals (fig. 6). Further, a receiver for receiving the signals transmitted by means of the transmitter via the transmission medium, is disclosed (fig. 7). The signals supplied by the combination means can be recorded on a record carrier (193) (fig. 10).

    • An apparatus for encoding a plurality of n digital information signals is provided with at least a first, second and third input terminal (1, 2, 3) for receiving a first, a second and a third digital information signal (L, R, C). A matrixing unit (10) is provided for generating a first and a second digital composite signal (L0, R0) from the at least first, second and third digital information signals. First and second data compression means (22.1, 22.2) are provided for data compressing the first and second composite signals (L0, R0) so as to obtain first and second data reduced digital composite signals. A first selection unit (16) is provided for selecting at least one information signal from said plurality of n information signals so as to obtain at least a first auxiliary signal (AUX1). At least a third data compression means (22.3) is present for data compressing the at least first auxiliary signal so as to obtain a first data reduced auxiliary signal. A formatting unit (24) is present for combining the first and second data reduced composite signals and the at least first data reduced auxiliary signal into a transmission signal suitable for transmission via a transmission medium. The apparatus further comprises at least first, second and third masked threshold determining means (26.1, 26.3, 26.4) for determining first (mtL), second (mtC) and third (mtL0) masked thresholds respectively. A second selection unit (28.1) is provided for deriving one masked threshold from at least the first (mtL) and third (mtL0) masked threshold so as to obtain a first selected masked threshold (mtl). Preferably, said first selected masked threshold is the smallest of the said at least first (mtL) and third (mtL0) masked threshold.

During a repeated encoding and decoding of a wideband digital signal in a subband encoding/decoding system or a transform encoding/decoding system, signal degradation may occur. In order to avoid this, the apparatus further comprises a variable delay unit (20) coupled between the input (1) and the splitter unit (3), for realizing a delay, the length of which is controlled by a control signal, and a control signal generator unit (24) for generating said control signal.
