    • A method and system for managing electronic mail (email) based on a user oriented penalty count (PC) random rejection. The invention determines a threshold for a specific user arid. assesses a cumulative PC for usage of a resource that exceeds the user specific threshold. Different operating states are determined based on a status associated with the resource. In a normal operating state, virtually all sent email is processed. In a selective-rejection state, sent email from a user with a cumulative PC is rejected randomly, while others are processed. In a random-rejection state, sent email from a user without a cumulative PC is randomly rejected based on a resource usage factor and an adjustment multiplier, while sent email from a user with a cumulative PC is completely rejected. The user maybe assigned an exempt status that enables processing of virtually all email from the user independent of user's PC.

    • Enabling a relatively fast look up for a rule associated with an arbitrarily selectable IP address. In one embodiment, RSBound objects are sorted into an array where each RSBound object is composed of a bound IP address (BIP), sister BIP, type, index, sister index, and a configured rule. The BIPs are derived from arbitrary user-specified IP addresses or IP address ranges. Each single IP address configuration derives one RSBound entry, where the BIP is the given IP address itself; and each IP range configuration derives two RSBound entries, and the range's lower bound and upper bound are their respective BIPs. The array is, sorted primarily based on the RSBound's BIP value, and their type and pair information are the tiebreakers. If a configured rule needs to be searched for a given IP address, a binary search is performed first to find a starting entry, from where a jump-skip search is performed to find the best matching rule for the given IP address. Additionally, although this invention is well suited for IP range matching, it can also be used to match keys with arbitrary ranges of other non-IP address types, e.g., mobile telephone numbers.

    • The present invention provides a system and method for monitoring network appliances using well-formatted data files. A system for monitoring a network appliance by recording operational data in well-formatted data files includes a data management module and a data presentation module. The data management module is configured to determine selected operational data associated with the network appliance and to record the selected operational data in well-formatted data files. The selected operational data are a subset of data regarding transaction performed by the network appliance. The data management module is also configured to record the selected operational data with minimum processing. The data presentation module is configured to present statistical data. The statistical data is determined from the selected operational data in the well- formatted data files. The data presentation module is also configured to provided the statistical data in real-time.
