    • In a wireless communications network, data of a first data stream is transmitted during a first portion of a repeating time period, the first data stream with at least one remote device. Also control information is transmitted during a second portion of the repeating time period, the control information including an identifier of the first data stream. A predetermined time interval is observed in which the transmission of a second data stream to the at least one remote device using the reserved identifier is prohibited. This time interval follows termination of the first data stream. Also, when receiving such transmissions, the data stream is considered active until the identifier of the data stream is missing from the second portion of the repeating time period for at least a predetermined time interval.

    • A technique is disclosed for wireless communications networks, to solve problems of channel congestion. A wireless communications device selects a channel finding technique in a first stage. The device then performs the selected channel finding technique with a plurality of channels to find a candidate channel. Then the initiating device sends a request to at least one remote device to change its channel from the current channel to the candidate channel during a time slot within a repeating time interval. Then in a second stage, the initiating device selects a channel changing technique based on whether the device has any active connections in the current channel. The initiating device then executes the selected channel changing technique.

    • A method and apparatus for enabling a network to provide information associated with neighboring network(s) of different access technologies to the wireless device, prior to the wireless device determining the need for a handover. When a determination is made by the network that a handover to a new access network is required, the network may send a message to the wireless device that commands the wireless device to leave a currently used access network. Alternatively, the network may send a message to the wireless device that guides or obligates the wireless device to select one of the access networks in the list, provided by the network, in case the wireless device chooses to make a handover. Upon receipt of a command message, the wireless device leaves a currently used access network either immediately or a reasonable time after having set up a connection to a new access network for ensuring smooth handover.
