摘要： A method of controlling the sideways motion of a trailer forming part of a combination vehicle, such as a road train, for road transport of heavy goods. The vehicle has a trailer including a semi-trailer body and a dolly mounted beneath the front of the semi-trailer body. The method includes steering at least some of the wheels on said axle sets relative to the dolly frame such that at high speeds, as the vehicle turns towards one side, steering the dolly wheels to induce the dolly to move towards that side and, at low speeds, as said vehicle turns towards that side, steering the dolly wheels to induce the dolly to move towards the opposite side.

摘要： A method of operating a semi-trailer in a heavy goods vehicle where the semi-trailer has at least one self-tracking axle. At road speeds above a first predetermined speed a restoring moment is applied to the castor-steering action of one or more of the self-tracking axles. This causes the wheel alignment to be moved away from an alignment which would be adopted if the castor steering action was unrestrained. At road speeds above a second predetermined speed the magnitude of the restoring moment is actively controlled so that said alignment of the wheels is dependent upon the road speed and upon a sideways acceleration measurement being made on the heavy goods vehicle.

The trailer comprises a semi-trailer body adapted to carry goods, a dolly mounted beneath the front of the semi-trailer body and connected to the semi-trailer body by a pivoting connection, said dolly comprising road wheels attached in one or more axle sets to a dolly frame, and a drawbar assembly connecting the dolly frame to a preceding vehicle unit by means of a trailer coupling assembly. The drawbar assembly defines an instant centre of rotation for the dolly which is located forwards of said trailer coupling assembly while the vehicle is moving forwards at high speeds, and which is located at least substantially at the trailer coupling assembly while the vehicle is moving forwards at low speeds.

A first axis extends through the first mounting pivot and the first coupling pivot, and a second axis extends through the second mounting pivot and the second coupling pivot; so that when in use, the first and second supports are pivotally connected to the fifth-wheel coupling to support and allow movement of the fifth-wheel coupling relative to the mounting structure, an intersection of the first and second axes defines a roll centre about which the fifth-wheel coupling moves, and the first and second supports are aligned respective to each other such that the fifth-wheel coupling is positioned between the roll centre and the mounting structure, so that movement of the first and second supports reduces the rotation transferred to the mounting structure
