    • The invention relates to a backlighting system (Bl) combining a low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp (TLl) with a plurality of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) (Ll) via an optical waveguide (LG). The light emitted by the LEDs is mixed inside the optical waveguide. In a first embodiment, the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp is arranged between the optical waveguide and the light exit window (EW). In a second embodiment, the optical waveguide is arranged between the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp and the light exit window. In a further, preferred embodiment, the optical waveguide comprises an arrangement of light out-coupling elements (OC2, OC3, OC4) which couple the mixed light from the optical waveguide out towards the light exit window via the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp. In another preferred embodiment, the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp comprises apertures in a diffuser coating for admitting the light emitted by the optical waveguide into a discharge vessel (V)of the low- pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp, thus providing a further mixing of the light emitted by the optical waveguide inside the discharge vessel. The low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp typically provides a first and a second primary color, and the plurality of LEDs typically provide a third primary color such that the combination of the three primary colors achieves an improved compliance with the EBU color standard.

    • The invention relates to a scanning backlight system (B2) comprising several light sources (TLl, TL2, TL3, Ll), wherein some of the light sources are driven in a scanning mode of operation and some of the light sources are driven in a continuous mode of operation. The scanning backlight system comprises light sources which together emit a first primary color, for example the primary color green, a second primary color, for example the primary color red, and a third primary color, for example the primary color blue. In a preferred embodiment of the scanning backlight system, the first primary color (being the primary color green) is driven in a scanning mode of operation and the second primary color (being the primary color red) is driven in a continuous mode of operation. In a scanning backlight system in which the primary color green is emitted in a scanning mode of operation, motion artifacts caused by blurring will be significantly reduced, because the sensitivity of the human eye to the primary color green is relatively high. By contrast, the impact of a display system on the reproduction of motion when the primary color red is emitted in a continuous mode of operation is expected to be minor, because the sensitivity of the human eye to the primary color red is relatively low. The cost of the scanning backlight system will be reduced if only some of the light sources are driven in a scanning mode of operation.

    • The invention provides an illumination device (1), arranged to provide illumination device light (250). The illumination device (1) comprising a light chamber (100), an electrically variable scattering element (500), and a controller (600). The light chamber (100) contains a light emitting diode (10) (LED) arranged to emit LED light (20); comprises a luminescent material layer(200) arranged remote from the LED (10) and arranged to absorb at least part of the LED light (20) and emit luminescent material emission (220); and comprises an exit face (301), through which one or more of the LED light (20) and the luminescent material emission(220) may escape to the exterior (22) of the light chamber (100) thereby providing illumination device light (250). The electrically variable scattering element (500) is arranged downstream of the luminescent material layer (200) and upstream of the exit face (301). The controller (600) is electrically connected to the electrically variable scattering element (500) and arranged to control the scattering of the electrically variable scattering element (500). Such device may allow the possibility of colour tuning and/or correlated colour temperature tuning of the illumination device light.
