    • The invention relates to a backlighting system (Bl) combining a low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp (TLl) with a plurality of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) (Ll) via an optical waveguide (LG). The light emitted by the LEDs is mixed inside the optical waveguide. In a first embodiment, the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp is arranged between the optical waveguide and the light exit window (EW). In a second embodiment, the optical waveguide is arranged between the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp and the light exit window. In a further, preferred embodiment, the optical waveguide comprises an arrangement of light out-coupling elements (OC2, OC3, OC4) which couple the mixed light from the optical waveguide out towards the light exit window via the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp. In another preferred embodiment, the low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp comprises apertures in a diffuser coating for admitting the light emitted by the optical waveguide into a discharge vessel (V)of the low- pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp, thus providing a further mixing of the light emitted by the optical waveguide inside the discharge vessel. The low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp typically provides a first and a second primary color, and the plurality of LEDs typically provide a third primary color such that the combination of the three primary colors achieves an improved compliance with the EBU color standard.
