摘要： A cutting tool (20) for removing material from a workpiece wherein the cutting tool is held in a pocket (84) of a tool holder (80). The cutting tool includes a cutting tool substrate (22) with a rake surface (36) and flank surfaces (32), as well as a notch at the intersection of a pair of adjacent ones of the flank surfaces (32). The substrate includes opposite flank surfaces (34) that are opposite from the notch (23) and are disposed at a substrate disposition angle (b) with respect to the rake surface of the cutting tool substrate. The cutting tool further includes a cutting blank (24) that is within the notch (23). The cutting blank has a rake surface (28) and a pair of exposed flank surfaces (26) wherein a cutting edge (30) is at the intersection of the rake surface and the exposed flank surfaces. The exposed flank surfaces (26) of the cutting blank are disposed at a cutting clearance angle (a) with respect to the rake surface (28) of the cutting blank (24). The cutting angle (a) is not equal to the substrate disposition angle (b).

摘要： A diamond-coated tool (80) and a process for making it. The process includes a sintering step. In that step, the tool substrate is sintered in an atmosphere and for a time and at a temperature so that superficial, exaggerated grain growth is promoted that imparts a surface roughness which may serve as anchoring sites during a subsequent diamond coating step which is performed by a vapor deposition technique. The diamond-coated tool includes a large grain substrate surface, and a high bond strength between the diamond coating and the substrate surface.
