    • A fuel cell system has : a fuel cell (12) having a first reactant inlet, a first reactant outlet, a second reactant inlet, a second reactant outlet, and optionally a coolant inlet and coolant outlet. A first reactant supply subsystem (31) supplies a first reactant incoming stream (30) to the first reactant inlet of the fuel cell. A second reactant supply subsystem (21) supplies a second reactant incoming stream (20) to the second reactant inlet of the fuel cell. A first reactant recirculation subsystem recirculates at least a portion of the first reactant exhaust stream (40) from the first reactant outlet to a regenerative dryer subsystem (80) in which one portion of the heat and moisture in first reactant exhaust stream is transferred to one of the first reactant incoming stream (30) in the first reactant supply subsystem and the second reactant incoming stream (20) in the second reactant supply subsystem. Another portion of the heat and moisture is transferred to the other stream. A method of controlling reactant and water in a fuel cell system is also disclosed.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for delivery and regulation of a process fluid to a multi-cell electrochemical device. A controller regulates the process fluid flow, after at least one of the process parameters indicates a drop in load current draw, based on the operating rate of the fuel cell and the rate of decrease in the load. The method of the present invention comprises (a) operating a component of the fuel cell system at a component operating rate; (b) driving a load using the fuel cell; (c) measuring an operating rate of the fuel cell; (d) normally adjusting the component operating rate in dependence upon the operating rate of the fuel cell; and, (e) in response to selected changes in the operating rate of the fuel cell, indicative of corresponding changes in the demand from the load, delaying adjustment of the component operating rate. The invention also provides a fuel cell system comprising (a) a fuel cell for driving a load; (b) at least one measuring device for monitoring an operating rate of the fuel cell; (c) a controller for controlling an operation rate of a component of the fuel cell system based on the operating rate of the fuel cell; and, (d) means for detecting selected changes in the operating rate of the fuel cell, indicative of corresponding changes in the demand from the load, and in response thereto, delaying adjustment of the operation rate of the component.
