    • A torsional vibration damper (1) comprises an annular driven hub member (2) and an outer annular inertia member (3) capable of limited rotational movement relative thereto. The damper (1) has diametrically opposed variable volume pumping chamber sets (16) defined by blades (11) of the inertia member being received in cavities in the hub member. Relative movement of said hub and inertia members in a first direction decreases the volume of one of said chambers (16) and increases the volume of the other whereas relative movement in the oposite direction causing a reverse variation in the volume of the chambers (16). The variable volume chambers (16) are connected, in use, to a source of damping fluid which is pressurised by the relative movement. Each blade (11) has a planar base surface that is adjacent a planar bottom surface of each cavity. The planar surfaces enable easier and cheaper manufacturing.

    • An isolating device (10) isolates fluctuations in torque of a drive shaft about a nominal torque value. The device comprises a first annular member (11) for connection to a rotary driving shaft and a second annular member (12) designed for connection to a driven piece of equipment such as a fan or alternator in an internal combustion engine. The first (11) and second (12) annular members are interconnected by a plurality of elastomeric elements (23) which are pre-compressed in a circumferential direction between retaining plates fixed to the first and second annular members (11, 12). The pre-compression permits a minimum torque of the drive shaft for a nominal torque level to the transmitted to the driven member load substantially without deflection of the elastomeric element (33). Hence there is little or no relative rotational displacement of the first and second members (11, 12) of the isolating device (10) during start up until the working range of the device is reached.

    • A centripetal turbine (1) comprises a housing (3) and a turbine wheel (4) mounted within the housing (3) and having turbine blades (5). The housing (3) defines an annular inlet passageway (7) arranged around a portion of the turbine wheel (4), and an outlet passageway (8) which has a generally cylindrical portion arranged around a portion of the turbine wheel (4). The housing (3) also defines a curved annular shoulder (9) curving radially outwards from the generally cylindrical portion of the outlet passageway (8) to the annular inlet passageway (7). The radially outer edge of each turbine blade (5) has a first portion (11) adjacent the generally cylindrical portion of the outlet passageway (8), and a second curved portion (12) adjacent the curved annular shoulder (9). The housing (3) is provided with an annular layer (13) of an abradable material covering substantially all of the substantially cylindrical portion of the outlet passageway (8) but at most only a relatively small annular portion of the curved shoulder (9) adjacent the cylindrical portion of the outlet passageway (8).
