    • A downhole optical fluid analyzer having an intermittently driven filter wheel. In at least some embodiments, the tool operates by passing light along an optical path through a downhole sample cell to a detector. At least one filter wheel having multiple filter elements intersects the optical path to operate on the light. The filter wheel is preferably driven in a variable speed manner to prolong each filter element's residence time on the optical path. Such driving may be accomplished by converting the continuous rotation of an electrical motor to an intermittent motion of the filter wheel. Possible mechanisms for this convertion include a peg-and-slot mechanism in which a circulating peg engages successive slots in a slotted wheel to impart intermittent motion. Other suitable mechanisms are also described.

    • Disclosed is a downhole fluid resistivity sensor that includes a ceramic cylinder having a fluid -contacting surface, and at least four metal pins that penetrate a wall of the ceramic cylinder at axially-spaced locations. The pins are bonded to the ceramic to form a pressure seal. The sensor may include a circuit that injects current into a fluid via an outer two of the pins, and measures a resulting voltage via an inner two of the pins. The circuit may also provide an indication of fluid resistivity based at least in part on the resulting voltage. At each of the axially-spaced locations, a set of multiple pins may penetrate the wall to contact the fluid at circumferentially-spaced positions. The fluid- contacting surface may be an inner surface or an outer surface of the ceramic cylinder. A downhole fluid resistivity measurement method is also described.

    • A dipole source for borehole acoustic logging is provided, including a cylindrical shell, a center beam coupled to the cylindrical shell and a movable projector inside the cylindrical shell to impact the center beam. The dipole source includes a cavity acoustically insulating the interior of the cylindrical shell from the exterior of the cylindrical shell. An acoustic logging tool for making measurements of a substrate surrounding a borehole with a body insertable in the borehole is also provided. The body includes an acoustic detector and a dipole source as above, along the axial length. The acoustic logging tool may include a control unit to process data collected from the acoustic detector and obtain information about the substrate surrounding the borehole. According to embodiments disclosed herein, a method for operating a dipole source and an acoustic logging tool as above is provided.
