摘要： The invention encompasses flow cytometric methods for detecting intracellular pathogens in cells at extremely low levels of infection. In particular, the method provides for the early and accurate detection of Leishmania-infected monocytes in peripheral blood and other body fluids and liquid suspensions of tissue-derived cells. This specific and highly sensitive flow cytometric method is useful as a technique for assessment of parasites in blood, and may also identify persons and animals who are undergoing active infections with Leishmania sp. or other intracellular pathogens.

摘要： Methods of use of anti-cholesterol antibodies are described for diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis. In one embodiment of the invention, anti-cholesterol antibodies are used to assay samples drawn from atherosclerotic lesions for the amount of VLDL, IDL and LDL, but not HDL molecules. In another embodiment of the invention, the anti-cholesterol antibodies are used as fusiogens to promote fusion of lipoprotein molecules and of liposomes, to promote clearance of cholesterol from the body.

摘要： The present invention encompasses methods for reducing or inhibiting growth factor in cancer cells and tissues. More particularly immunogenic growth factor-containing compositions are administered to a human or animal with a cancer or tumor. The immunogenic compositions elicit the production of antibodies specific for growth factor which reduce the level or circulating growth factor, thus reducing or eliminating the proliferation of cancer. The present invention encompasses growth factor-containing liposomes and vesicles having portions of growth factor externally presented on their surfaces. The present invention also includes antibodies specific for growth factor. Thus, according to the present invention, growth factor levels are reduced either by active immunization of an individual using immunogenic growth factor-containing compositions or by passive immunization via administering to the individual an antibody or a group of antibodies specific for growth factor.
