    • An electrophoretic display device comprises a plurality of pixels, each pixel has a cell area containing a plurality of charged pigment particles (43) dispersed between two opposite electrodes (411, 421), and a semiconducting passivation layer (45) is provided on one or both of the two opposite electrodes (411, 421). The semiconducting passivation layer can be made of MOx/y, MSx/y, or MNx/y where M is a metal or semiconductor such as Al, Sn, Zn, Si, Ge, Ni, Ti, or Cd; x is a positive integer; and y is independently a non-zero positive integer. The semiconducting passivation layer may have a doped Si, ZnOx/y, ZnSx/y, CdSx/y and TiOx/y or a III-V type semiconducting material. The semiconducting passivation layer can be doped with a dopant which can be an n-type donor or a p-type acceptor, the n-type donor is N, P, As or F; and the p-type acceptor is B, Al, Ga, In, Be, Mg or Ca.

    • This invention relates to an electrophoretic display or a liquid crystal display and novel processes for its manufacture. The electrophoretic display (EPD) of the present invention comprises microcups of well-defined shape, size and aspect ratio and the microcups are filled with charged pigment particles dispersed in an optically contrasting dielectric solvent. The liquid crystal display (LCD) of this invention comprises well-defined microcups filled with at least a liquid crystal composition having its ordinary refractive index matched to that of the isotropic cup material. A novel roll-to-roll process and apparatus of the invention permits the display manufacture to be carried out continuously by a synchronized photo-lithorgrahic process. The synchronized roll-to-roll process and apparatus permits a pre-patterned photomask, formed as a continuous loop, to be rolled in a synchronized motion in close parallel alignment to a web which has been pre-coated with a radiation sensitive material, so as to maintain image alignment during exposure to a radiation source. The radiation sensitive material may be a radiation curable material, in which the exposed and cured portions form the microcup structure. In an additional process step, the radiation sensitive material may be a positively working photoresist which temporarily seals the microcups. Exposure of a selected subset of the microcups via the photomask image permits selective re-opening, filling and sealing of the microcup subset. Repetition with additional colors permits the continuous assembly of a multicolor EPD or LCD display.

    • The present invention relates to an improved EPD which comprises both the traditional up/down switching and the in-plane switching modes. In other words, the improved EPD has dual switching modes. The monochrome EPDs of the present invention are capable of displaying highlight color of choice which is different from the text. For example, white background, blue text, and red highlight can be shown in any selected areas of the display. Furthermore, the full color EPDs of the present invention are capable of displaying high contrast images of high color saturation. Both high quality black and white states are possible in the full color displays of the present invention. The EPDs of the present invention do not need complex circuitry design, and are compatible with low cost and high yield roll-to-roll manufacturing processes.

    • An adhesive composition comprising: (i) a one part curable epoxy adhesive and (ii) a low profile additive (LPA), the low profile additive being a polymer that is compatible with the epoxy adhesive such that it forms a single phase when admixed with the adhesive composition and that separates from the adhesive to form a network of stress-absorbing nodules therein when the adhesive is cured, the low profile additive being present in an amount sufficient to prevent or reduce shrinkage and/or the formation of voids or cracks when the adhesive is cured.
