    • Rapid heating of a surface of an object is achieved by moving the surface of the object proximate to one or more flexible baffles. The one or more flexible baffles are in fluid communication with a pressurized and heated flow of air. The one or more baffles are arranged to contact the surface of the object in the absence of the flow of air. The flow of air creates a gap between the one or more flexible baffles and the adjacent portions of the surface. The flow of air traveling through the gap heats these portions of the surface with a high thermal transfer efficiency. Objects to be heated may include substantially two-dimensional planar objects such as thin plates, as well as three-dimensional objects such as cylinders.

    • Methods and apparatus are provided for controlling the charge on a stream of fluid droplets by minimizing the phase difference between a calibration signal and its detected signature signal. Such control can be accomplished by adjusting a droplet charging means, a droplet generation means, and/or the signals on either. Droplets are generated by a stimulation signal on a droplet generation means and signal-wise charged by a charging signal on a droplet charging means. The calibration signal, which does not appreciably affect the trajectory the droplets, is also imposed onto the stream of droplets. The phase of the calibration signal is independent of the charging signal. A charge detection means and a suitable filter extract a signature signal from the charged droplets. The phase difference between the signature signal and the calibration signal is then minimized.

    • Particular embodiments of the invention provide light valves for generating a plurality of individually modulatable channels used in imaging systems. Two or more of the channels have different (non-uniform) sizes. The non-uniform channel sizes are selected to correspond with a regular pattern to be imaged. Light valves according to particular embodiments of the invention comprise at least one low resolution group of light valve elements having a low resolution number of individual light valve elements coupled to be independently driven by a low resolution driver and at least one high resolution group of light valve elements having a high resolution number of individual light valve elements coupled to be independently driven by a high resolution driver. The low resolution number and high resolution number are different from one another so as to generate low resolution and high resolution channels having different (non-uniform) sizes.
