    • Systems and methods for reading a RFID-tag signal in the presence of noise and other propagation and circuit impairments using a RFID-tag reader are disclosed. The method includes receiving with a RFID-tag reader multiple copies of an original RFID-tag signal from a RFID tag. The original RFID-tag signal comprises an original bit sequence representative of information stored in the RFID tag. At least some of the received RFID-tag signal copies differ from one another due to noise or other signal impairments. The received multiple copies are processed on a sample-by-sample basis in the RFID-tag reader using digital signal processing techniques to obtain an improved received digitized RFID tag signal that substantially removes the noise and other impairments. This improved signal is used to recover the original bit sequence and thus the information stored in the RFID tag.

    • Multiple uses are made available with an optical component (10) that is based on a fiber Fabry-Perot resonator (12). The optical component (10) includes substrate (14) having a variable length (16) for supporting and tuning the Fabry-Perot resonator (12) by varying the variable length (16) of the substrate (14) in response to a variable stimulus. A plurality of fiber retainers (22) are disposed on the substrate (14) for mounting and aligning the fiber Fabry-Perot resonator (12). To fix the position of the fiber Fabry-Perot resonator (12) relative to the substrate (14) and to define the variable length (16), a pair of binders (24) are disposed on the substrate (14) proximate selected opposed pairs (221 and 222) of the plurality of the fiber retainers (22).

    • An optical system (100) that maximizes signal quality related to spectral shape or an optical signal includes a light source module (102), a light receiver module (110), a plurality of fixed optical filters and a tunable optical filter (112). The light source module includes a light source that provides an optical signal to an optical fiber that includes a plurality of optical fiber segments. The light receiver module (110) includes a receiver input (112) that receives the optical signal from one of the plurality of the optical fiber segments. The plurality of fixed optical filters filter the optical signal and are coupled between the light source module (102) and the light receiver module (110) by the plurality of optical fiber segments. The tunable optical filter (112) includes a control input (113), a filter input (107) and a filter output (115). The filter input (113) receives the optical signal and the filter output (115) provides a filtered optical signal. A center filter frequency of the tunable optical filter is varied to maximize signal quality exhibited by the filtered optical signal responsive to a control signal on the control input (113).
