    • A multi-core optical waveguide 10, such as a dual core waveguide, having a pair of cores 12,14 disposed within a cladding 13 is provided. The cores are equally spaced and parallel to the axis of the waveguide. The cores can be spaced to provide optical coupling between the cores. The outer dimension d2 of the cladding 13 is at least about 0.3 mm; and the outer dimension d1 of the cores 12,14 is such that they propagate in a single spatial mode. The multi-core waveguide may be used in many optical components, such as a bandpass filter and an optical add/drop multiplexer. For the bandpass filter, a Bragg grating having the same reflection wavelength is written into both cores at substancially the same distance from the imput end 86,87 of the cores. The cores 12,14 have the same propagation constants to permit coupling of all the energy of the WDM input signal 84 from one core to the other. The length of the waterguide 100 is substantially equal to the coupling length (Lc), provided all the energy of the through wavelengths is desired at the output end of the second core. Generally, the grating 82 is substantially centered in the waveguide at Lc/2.

    • An optical filter for filtering a spectral profile of an optical signal for providing an output signal having a desire gain profile, such as a flatten gain profile. The filter comprises an optical waveguide that includes a core (42) disposed within a cladding (44) having an outer dimension greater than 0.3 mm. A Bragg grating (181-185) is imparted or written in the core of the waveguide that attenuates the received optical input signal (16) in accordance with a defined reflection or transmission filter profile. The Bragg grating may be a slanted grating. The filter profile is complementary to the spectral gain profile of the input signal to provide an output signal (20) having a substantially flat spectral profile of a desired wavelength band. The cladding of the waveguide may have a mechanically advantageous outer geometry (e.g., a "dogbone" shape) for allowing an axial compressive force to tune the Bragg grating. The waveguide may be packaged within an athermal device, which tunes the grating to compensate for temperature dependent changes. Further, the waveguide may be packaged in a tuning device to selective tune the gratings to shift the center wavelength of the spectral profile of the filter, or to change the shape of the filter profile.

    • An optical add/drop module includes an add channel (66), an input channel (68), a drop channel (70) and an output channel (72), with each channel aligned to transmit or receive light reflected from a common mirror (74) in at least one state of the add/drop module. Rotating the mirror changes the state of the module.     • An optical filter, including a pair of Bragg grating units optically coupled to respective ports of a circulator, is provided for filtering a selected wavelength band of light from a DWDM input light. Each grating unit includes a respective tunable optical element, which have a reflective element, such as a Bragg grating. Generally, one grating unit filters a selected wavelength band of light adn reflects the selected wavelength band to an output of the optical fitler. This double reflection of the selected wavelength band provides an optical filter having an effective filter function that is equal to the product of the individual filter functions of the grating units. To create a desired effective filter function, the gratings may be written to have different filter functions or grating profiles. One or both of the grating units may also be tunable to selectively create, tailor, shape or change the effective filter function of the optical filter in response to a control signall by offsetting the reflection wavelengths of the gratings, having different grating profiles.

    • A compression-tuned fiber Bragg grating based reconfigurable wavelength add/drop module has a compression force assembly and an all-glass Bragg grating compression unit having gratings spaced along an axis of compression. The compression force assembly responds to a control electronics signal containing information about a selected wavelength of a channel to be added to or dropped from an optical traffic signal, for providing a compression force applied along the axis of compression. The compression unit responds to the optical traffic signal and the compression force, for providing an all-glass Bragg grating compression unit optical signal having the selected wavelength of the channel to be added to or dropped from the optical traffic signal. The compression unit optical signal may include either the traffic with an added reflected channel(s), or a dropped reflected channel(s). The compression unit is a "dogbone" structure having either a glass tube with an optical fiber fused therein, or a single large diameter waveguide having a core. The core of the optical fiber or waveguide has the gratings spaced therein. The axis of compression is parallel with the longitudinal axis of the dogbone structure.
