摘要： In a digital satellite television system in which a television receives its signal via receiver/decoder, such as a set top box, interactive applications can be downloaded and run on the receiver/decoder. The application code is arranged as modules, and the downloading of modules is preceded by searching a directory module within a specified local address. The modules are signed and the directory module is signed and encrypted so that a single encryption applies to all of the modules making up the application. Multiple public encryption keys are stored in ROM in the receiver/decoder, so that applications can be created by different sources, without the sources needing to know each other's private encryption keys. A facility is provided to enable an encryption key to be temporarily stored in RAM in the receiver/decoder, so that a manufacturer of the receiver/decoder can check its functionality. A signature of the directory may be hidden at a variable position in a block of dummy data in the directory module. An application to be downloaded may be checked against an application validation bitmap stored in the receiver/decoder.

摘要： The invention includes a mostly conventional digital television system (2000) to transmit compressed digital signals. A multiplexer (2004) receives a plurality of further input signals, assembles one or more transport streams and transmits compressed digital signals to a transmitter (2008) of the broadcast centre via linkage (2010). The transmitter (2008) transmits electromagnetic signals via uplink (2012) towards a satellite transponder (2014), where they are electronically processed and broadcast via notional downlink (2016) to earth receiver (2018). The signals received by receiver (2018) are transmitted to an integrated receiver/decoder (2020) connected to the end user's television set (2022). The receiver/decoder (2020) decodes the compressed MPEG-2 signal into a television signal for the television set (2022). A conditional access system (3000) is connected to the multiplexer (2004) and the receiver/decoder (2020), and is located partly in the broadcast centre and partly in the decoder. It enables the end user to access digital television broadcasts from one or more broadcast suppliers. A smartcard, capable of decrypting messages relating to one or several television programmes sold by the broadcast supplier, can be inserted into the receiver/decoder (2020). Using the decoder (2020) and smartcard, the end user may purchase commercial offers in either a subscription mode or a pay-per-view mode. A number of features of particular interest are disclosed, involving the randomization of EMMs, mixing parameter length and identifier on EMMs and the like to save space, dynamic allocation of bandwidth for specific EMMs, and the STM being separate from the SMS.

摘要： A digital television satellite or cable system broadcasts to receiver/decoders which also receive control information (control programs, i.e. applications) to allow such tasks as reviewing television programme listings, setting up home banking interactions, and answering quiz questions connected with programmes being transmitted. The invention provides a method of developing such control programs on a workstation 4013. The workstation is coupled to a receiver/decoder-type unit 2021 which substantially duplicates the receiver/decoder with a television set 2023 coupled thereto. Control programs are developed including control statements responsive to signals from the workstation and test statements which return signals to the workstation. The program is passed to the receiver/decoder-type unit, and a synthetic broadcast digital television signal is generated (at 4045) and fed to the receiver/decoder-type unit. The control program is then run on the receiver/decoder-type unit, the program responding to control signals from the workstation and returning test signals thereto.

A group of C redundancy blocks is generated, each redundancy block being related to respective ones of the data blocks in the R groups by being a bitwise exclusive OR or NOR of those data blocks. Each of the groups of data blocks and the group of redundancy blocks are repeatedly transmitted from the transmitter. At the receiver/decoder, at least some of the transmitted blocks are received and supplied to the computer. The computer is used to determine for at least one of the received redundancy blocks whether that redundancy block and all except one of its respective data blocks have been received, and if so regenerate said one data block. Lost data blocks can be regenerated without waiting for retransmitting.

The receiver/decoder decodes a compressed MPEG-type signal, and is controlled by a remote controller handset, through an interface in the receiver/decoder.
