摘要： An apparatus and a method for preventing a user from bypassing a viewer blocking system that uses program related information, such as content ratings, included in a program signal. The present invention prevents the user from exploiting the time delay associated with detecting, decoding and comparing the program related information by switching channels to observe portions of objectionable programs before the blocking system can react. The present apparatus comprises a processor (110) which provides an output signal (RGB OUT) derived from a selected program signal (VIDEO, VIDEO IN, AUDIO IN) of a selected signal channel and prevents or allows user access to the output signal in response to a determination of whether a user selected program blocking criteria is met. The processor modifies the output of a selected program signal upon user selection of a new signal channel if a default blocking mode is selected by the user, then continues to modify the program signal associated with the newly selected signal channel at least until the program related information is determined.

摘要： A method and apparatus for controlling access to television programming uses a remote control device. The remote control device contains program control data which limits the viewer's access to television programming. The program control data is created and modified by a user with the master control user id assigned to the remote control device. The remote control device is optionally assigned one or more user ids for creating, maintaining, and in one embodiment activating a user-customizable profile which controls programming access according to the users' preferences. The program control data, user profile data, and related circuitry is stored in the remote control device, or alternatively in the television receiver or a control device attached to the television receiver. Where the circuitry is not in the remote control devices the remote control device has a unique identifying signal which causes the programming control circuitry to employ the program control data and user profile data associated with that particular remote control device.

摘要： A modem (33) is included in a television receiver for transferring data, such as "pay per view" billing information, to a modem (37) in a billing station during periodic callback operations. The television receiver modem (33) monitors the telephone line (35) for predetermined conditions, such as the presence of high frequency energy or a drop in the telephone line loop current, indicative of telephone use. The television receiver modem (33) will ordinarily inhibit or terminate a callback in order to avoid interfering with normal telephone calls when the predetermined conditions are detected. However, the detection of the predetermined conditions may be caused by telephone network problems and not by normal telephone usage. Accordingly, the modem (33) is controlled to ignore the detection of the conditions after a predetermined number of unsuccessful callbacks due to the detection of the conditions until a successful callback is achieved.

摘要： A system is described which provides a signal (310) which is sent for tier control purposes to the customer premises (350) along with one or more other tiers of cable channels. This "Tier Control" signal is used to enable a given subscriber to receive a highband tier, and to assure that a particular cable operator cannot deny a specific one of the other tiers to any customer with an appropriate Channel Expander Box (200) but can indeed deny a highband tier to any customer. The cable operator can deny access to the highband tier by use of a switch (227) in the Channel Expander Box (200). The system also provides tiering in a hierarchical fashion in such a way that one tier of the "platform" that is the composite of all available tiers is optional to the customer of the platform while one or more of the other tiers is not available. Thus a programmer who owns space on a compulsory tier is assured that their programs will be carried by every customer of the platform regardless of whether another tier is carried or not.
