    • A saw blade (100) has a plurality of teeth (104) with each tooth formed by a beveled gullet (110) forming a trailing face (118), a beveled gullet (110) forming a leading face (116) and a planar surface (122) forming a curved cutting edge (120). The gullets are beveled in opposite directions. The planar surface is generally parallel to the beveled trailing face. The tooth profile provides a saw tooth having a positive rake angle (128) to significantly improve the strength of the tooth. The method of manufacturing of the tooth profile begins by orienting a saw blade blank (160) about three axes and performing a first grinding operation which forms every other tooth gullet and every other planar surface. The partially formed blank is then oriented about two of the three axes in an opposite direction and a second grinding operation is performed. The second grinding operation grinds the remaining gullets and planar surfaces.

    • A universal powerhead apparatus (12) which is securable to a frame portion (14) of a land vehicle (10, 84, 88), pump or other tool to replace an existing internal combustion engine of the device without requiring significant modification to the frame portion of the device. The powerhead apparatus (12) includes an electric motor (26) and a universal mounting plate (16) which is secured to a portion of the motor. The universal mounting plate (16) has a footprint substantially similar to that of a specific make and displacement of internal combustion engine which the apparatus (12) is intended to replace. The overall footprint of the apparatus (12) is also similar to the specific make and displacement of a gasoline powered engine which it is designed to replace. The apparatus (12) can be secured directly to a frame portion of a land vehicle (10, 84, 88), tool or pump in either a horizontal or vertical orientation to thus enable it to be used as a power source for vehicles requiring a horizontally disposed output shaft as wellas vehicles requiring a vertically disposed output shaft. The apparatus (12) may be assembled to the land vehicle (10, 84, 88), tool or pump in a factory or retrofitted to replace a specific make and displacement of gasoline powered engine. In one preferred embodiment, the apparatus (12) is powered by at least one battery (25) disposed within a housing (20) thereof. In an alternative preferred embodiment, the apparatus (12) is powered directly from an AC power source. The use of the apparatus (12) completely eliminates the undesirable emissions produced by internal combustion engines and the periodic maintenance typically associated with such engines.

    • A battery charger (10) includes a capacitor (20) which establishes a level of current sufficient to fast charge a battery (18) having from one to twenty cells. An SCR (16) is controlled by a timer (42) to initially delay the supply of current while determining whether the battery (18) is hot or cool. If battery (18) is cool, charger (10) proceeds to fast charge the battery. After battery (18) is fully charged, the battery heats to a temperature where an NTC thermistor (58) responds to trigger a second timer (52) which controls SCR (16) to stop the fast charging operation. Charger (10) is then controlled to prevent the charger from thereafter re-entering a fast charge mode. If battery (18) is initially hot, charger (10) is controlled to further delay the initiation of a fast charge operation until the battery cools to or below the charge-start temperature. A second NTC thermistor (90) is provided to compensate for the potential effect on the operation of the thermistor (58) in response to temperature levels emanating from any environment other than from the battery (18).

    • A battery retention latch (50, 140) comprises an annular ring member (52, 142), a release button (54, 172, 174) and a spring arm (56, 190, 192, 194, 196). The annular ring (52, 142) retains a battery pack (26) in a cordless device (20, 120) regardless of the angular orientation of the battery pack (26) about a casing axis. The spring arm (56, 190, 192, 194, 196) maintains the ring (52, 142) in a normally engaged position, and upon depressing the push button (54, 172, 174), the battery (26) may be removed from the device (20, 120). Also, a battery retention latch (350) comprises a retaining member (354), a release button (356) and a cam element (362). A biasing member (358) maintains the retention latch in a normally engaged position. The cam element (362) retains a battery pack (26) in a cordless device (352) regardless of the angular orientation of the battery pack (26) about a casing axis. A holding device (382, 394) maintains the battery (26) in the cavity (34) against a spring ejecting force such that the battery (26) partially extends from the device (352) enabling the battery (26) to be removed from the device (352).
