    • Two production lines for the manufacture of armatures or stators for electric motors are separated over at least part of their length by a common partition (104). The juxtaposed proximity of the two production lines allows operations on articles on both lines to be carried out simultaneously by equipment mounted on a common operating head. Shuttles (171, 172) are provided upstream and downstream of coil winding areas (137) so that armature or stator bodies from one production line can be automatically diverted to a winder on the other production line and returned when wound. The height of the laminations is determined by picking a stack close to the maximum height permissible, measuring this height and, if necessary, removing a lamination via a vacuum line mounted on a measuring head. After winding, the ends of the magnetic wires on the armature are stripped using a laser. The dual highway style production lines provide economy in floor space and operators, and by use of the transfer shuttles (171, 172) enable bottlenecks of one line to be handled by the other line.

    • A battery pack (13) comprises an elongated cylindrical, metal casing (35), a plurality of cells (41, 43) in casing (35) and three coaxial pack terminals (46, 54, 61). For enhanced convenience, pack terminals (46, 54, 61) are electrically connectable in a cordless device (11) regardless of the angular orientation of the pack (13) about casing axis (33). To reduce cost and increase durability, pack (13) has no welded connections and will permit high current discharge rates. Cells (41, 43) are electrically connected but are mechanically disconnected. A spring (73) engages cell (41) and biases cells (41, 43) tightly together in compression to form good, low resistance electrical contact between cells (41, 43), casing base cap (45) and top (53). To provide a pack with two output voltages, the third pack terminal (61) has a polarity, relative to first pack terminal (46), the same as second pack terminal (54) and is electrically connected to the cell can terminal (43b) of forward cell (43), thereby electrically by-passing cell (43).

    • A keyless chuck (10) includes a jaw assembly (18) with jaws (32) that can be advanced in respective guideways (40) to grip a tool bit and retracted to loosen the grip on the tool bit. A jaw thrust member (34) is operatively coupled to the jaws (32) and to a threaded spindle (24) and is forced forwardly or rearwardly on rotation relative to the threaded spindle (24) to advance or retract the jaws (32). The threaded spindle (24) engages the jaw thrust member through a small-area contact patch (72) to limit the operating friction and thus provide a chuck which can be readily hand-thightened and which self-tightens in response to torque transmitted through the chuck. A lock mechanism is provided to selectively lock the threaded spindle (24) relative to the jaw assembly (18); or allow, optionally limited, uni-directional movement of the threaded spindle (24) relative to the jaw assembly (18). The lock mechanism includes a lock plate (104) coupled to a chuck adjusting sleeve (20) and includes a set of teeth (114) on an axial face for engagement with complementary teeth (108) on an axial face of a chuck adjusting nut (42) forming part of the jaw assembly (18). The lock plate (104) is normally spring-biased into engagement with the chuck adjusting nut (42) but can be disengaged from the chuck adjusting nut (42) to temporarily disable the locking mechanism. The keyless chuck (10) is assembled in such a way that the run-out of the finished chuck is minimal.
