The user equipment method of supporting device-to-device communication within a wireless telecommunications network, comprises: determining a capability of a cell supporting the user equipment to operate with simultaneous device-to-device and cellular communication; and responsive to the determining, selecting a device-to-device communication scheme based on a device-to-device communication capability of the user equipment. In this way, an optimized communication scheme used by the user equipment and network can be selected to best match the capabilities of the user equipment and the base station supporting the cell. This enables the appropriate device-to-device communication scheme to be used for a range of different scenarios.

    • The invention provides a method of and apparatus for controlling a ProSe service in a communication system. An eNB sends a first PLMN identifier, and carrier frequency information of another PLMN to indicate at least one carrier frequency at which a UE of the other PLMN can carry out the ProSe service, to a UE in a shared cell, and if the UE is in an idle state, then the UE reselects a cell or selects a PLMN; or if the UE is in a connected state, then the UE performs a handover procedure. If the handover procedure fails, then the UE releases an RRC connection to enter the idle states, or is DRX-configured and carries out the ProSe service in a DRX sleep time. With the solution of the invention, the UE can reselect or be handed over to the cell to carry out the ProSe service at the carrier frequency indicated by the carrier frequency information to thereby avoid the problem of an overload arising from too many ProSe services being carried out concurrently in the shared cell.

In this way, rather than only a single set of load-balancing parameters being transmitted, individual sets of load- balancing parameters may be transmitted which are optimized for each network operator sharing the base station to provide a public land mobile network. This enables each network operator to set different load-balancing or traffic steering parameters, depending on their requirements and their agreements with the first and second radio access networks.

    • Aspects provide methods for controlling user equipment operation in a wireless communications network configured to support communication with the user equipment according to a communication mode which utilises repetition of messaging; computer program products and network nodes operable to perform those methods. One method comprises: determining a modulation and coding regime to be used by the user equipment; identifying a repetition regime to be implemented by the user equipment in conjunction with the modulation and coding regime; and communicating an indication of the determined modulation and coding regime and identified repetition regime to the user equipment. Aspects recognise that when implementing a coverage enhanced region within a network it is possible that fixed repetition levels can be defined for CE-MTC UE. Those fixed repetition levels can be implemented by a network and recognise differences between the CE-MTC UE radio condition. That is to say, the number of repetitions used may correspond to radio condition being experienced at a machine-type communication device: those in poorer coverage regions will be selected to receive a greater number of repetitions than those in a better radio coverage region. The granularity of such repetition levels may subject to a given operator's implementation of a coverage enhanced region. The first aspect recognises that it is possible to implement varying repetition levels for user equipment operating in the coverage enhanced region supported by a network access node. Those varying repetition levels can be configured at the network access node; for example, an eNodeB.

Aspects and embodiments provide a method of sending cell specific network selection to allow a user to choose between Wi-Fi and 3 GPP RAN based upon the meeting of one or more criteria. The criteria may inform network selection information or take the form of selection policies sent to users. Those policies may take into account, amongst other things, both Wi-Fi and 3 GPP cell load but without actually sending 3 GPP load to a user.

The control module (24) is further operable to provide configuration information relating to a temporary set of radio resources for communication between the mobile transceiver (100) and another mobile transceiver (300), the temporary set of radio resources being valid during a limited time interval. The control module (24) is further operable to monitor the limited time interval.
