    • A method of controlling user equipment operation in a radio coverage cell of a wireless telecommunication network supported by a base station, a computer program product and base station operable to perform the method. The user equipment is configurable to communicate using a communication link established with the base station or with a wireless access point of a wireless local area network based upon a relative priority associated with each of the base station and the wireless access point. The method comprises: assessing at least one operational parameter of the cell of radio coverage; assigning a priority to communication using a communication link established with the base station based on the assessment of the at least one operational parameter; and communicating an indication of the assigned priority to the user equipment. Aspects and embodiments provide a method of sending cell specific network selection to allow a user to choose between Wi-Fi and 3 GPP RAN based upon the meeting of one or more criteria. The criteria may inform network selection information or take the form of selection policies sent to users. Those policies may take into account, amongst other things, both Wi-Fi and 3 GPP cell load but without actually sending 3 GPP load to a user.

The method of facilitating allocation of resources to support communication between a user equipment and a base station of a wireless telecommunications network comprises the steps of: determining a traffic profile, the traffic profile characterising timing of traffic comprised of data packets transmitted between the user equipment and the base station due to an application being executed by the user equipment; and providing the traffic profile to the base station for use when allocating the resources to support communication between the user equipment and the base station during execution of the application. In this way, the particular traffic characteristics of the user equipment can be estimated and provided to the network in order to assist the network when determining how best to allocate resources to support the user equipment. This enables the network to better match the resources allocated to the likely traffic profile of the user equipment. This helps to better match the resource allocation to the user equipment to avoid periods when resources are allocated but no traffic occurs or when traffic is available but the resources are.

The method of configuring radio resource allocation to user equipment in a wireless communication network in response to an indication of ambient operational characteristics of said user equipment comprises: receiving an indication of how many cell boundaries have been crossed by the user equipment in a monitoring period, together with an indication of an operational parameter indicative of a relationship between the user equipment and each cell visited by the user equipment during the monitoring period; and configuring an inactivity timer to apply to the user equipment in response to the received indications. Aspects and embodiments described provide mobility information to a network in order to allow a network to configure radio parameters for user equipment such to achieve better battery consumption and reduced signaling load within a network. Techniques described may be useful to smart phones operating with background applications running.
