    • An improved, environnmentally safe protective coating for marine surfaces is provided which is specially formulated for application to boat hulls for resisting marine growth thereon while minimizing release of toxic antifoulants into the environment. The coatings of the invention can therefore be used on boat hulls for preventing marine growth without the severe pollution effects associated with conventional antifoulant paints. The coatings are preferably made from powdered mixtures which include respective quantities of a polyamide such as Nylon 11, and a metallic antifoulant. In certain cases, the compositions may include an inorganic porous carrier such as carbon black, as well as glass spheres. In particularly perferred embodiments, use is made of an antifoulant such as elemental tin or copper or mixtures thereof together with an adhesive and an algicide. Application of the mixture to marine surfaces involves providing a supersonic gas stream, passing the gas stream through an electric arc thereby heating the gas stream and converting a portion thereof to plasma, injecting a quantity of the powdered mixture into the heated gas stream substantially downstream from the arc so as to melt the powder without overheating it, and then spraying the melted mixture onto a surface whereupon it cools and provides a bonded protective coating thereon.

    • Processes for preparing and using controlled characteristic beads are disclosed, the process of making the beads including the steps combining at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer with a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer and a monomer-soluble initiator to form a monomer phase; combining the monomer phase with a liquid in which the monomer phase is substantially immiscible to form a reaction mixture such that when the monomer phase is vinyl in nature the liquid also includes a high molecular weight, high charge density surfactant, and when the monomer phase is acrylic in nature the liquid includes an organic polymer colloid suspending agent; agitating the reaction mixture at an initial speed and temperature for a time sufficient to homogenize the reaction mixture, thereby producing first intermediate droplets, and subsequently reducing the agitation speed to a level sufficient to allow limited coalescence of the first intermediate droplets to form second intermediate droplets having size distribution with less than about 30 % variance from the mean; and polymerizing the second intermediate droplets to form solid, substantially non-porous beads. One method of using controlled characteristic beads includes combining the beads produced by the process with a sample containing two separable components and centrifuging the sample for a time and at a rate sufficient to produce distinct bands of components.

    • An apparatus and method for applying plasma flame sprayed polymers is provided which permits the application of a thin coating of heat fusible material onto substrate material. The apparatus is used with a conventional plasma generator (12) whereby materials such as nylon or other synthetic polymers may be injected into the plasma stream to melt the powder without overheating it. The apparatus includes a central water-cooled nozzle (58), surrounded by an open co-axial flow area within a barrel (16). The polymer is evenly distributed on the substrate due to the co-axial flow of the plasma stream and air drawn through the flow area. A source of vacuum (20) connected to the apparatus (10) draws fumes generated by the melted polymers into an opening surrounding the bore (98) at the front of the barrel (16), whereby the vacuumed gases may be filtered. The apparatus (10) may be used in a method of applying plasma flame sprayed polymer compositions to a surface.

    • Flavored food and pharmaceutical compositions include one or more flavor additives incorporated within polymeric particles, usually within an internal pore network defined by individual polymeric particles. The polymeric particles are, in turn, dispersed within and/or over a surface of an orally-deliverable matrix material, which is usually a solid or semi-solid substrate. In the case of chewable compositions, the flavor additives will be released into the orally-deliverable matrix material as the composition is chewed and held in the mouth, thus prolonging the flavor of the composition. In the case of dried powders and mixes, the flavor will typically be made available as the product is consumed or be released into the matrix material as the composition is further processed. When two flavors are combined with the polymeric particles, the relative amounts of the additives can be selected to provide simultaneous release and exhaustion of the additives.
