    • A fluorescent probe represented by the following formula (I): (I) wherein R and R each represents hydrogen, a substituent for trapping a proton, metal ion, or active oxygen species, etc.; R represents a monovalent substituent; R and R each represents hydrogen or halogeno; and R represents hydrogen, alkylcarbonyl, or alkylcarbonyloxymethyl; provided that R , R , and R are selected in such a combination that (1) before the trapping of, e.g., a proton, R , R , and R give a substantially high electron density to the benzene ring to which they are bonded, in order that the compound represented by the formula (I) be substantially nonfluorescent and that (2) after the trapping of, e.g., a proton, R , R , and R substantially reduce the electron density of the benzene ring to which they are bonded, in order that the compound resulting from the trapping and derived from the compound represented by the formula (I) be substantially highly fluorescent. The fluorescent probe has excellent fluorescent properties.
