    • The surgical reamer (20) has a hollow dome (24) with apertures (26) spaced apart arranged in arcs (28) extending from an apex (30) of the dome to the base portion (32) of the dome, and removable teeth (22) positioned in the apertures. Each cutting tooth (22) has a flange (52) that is aligned flush with the external surface of the dome (24), and a raised cutting edge (50) extending above the flange and the external surface (36) of the dome, and an interior passageway (39) communicating between the outside and inside of the dome. In one embodiment, a base plate (56) is removably secured on the base portion (32) of the dome (24) to provide closure of the central cavity (34) of the dome. One, two or three mounting bars having means for attaching a powered rotary driver thereto may be affixed to a back side of the base.

    • An acetabular reamer (10) has a cutting structure (12) rotatable about a longitudinal axis (14) with a domed shell portion (16). The shell (16) has an outer surface (18) presenting multiple cutting sites (20) and an inner surface (22) for accumulation of debris. The shell (16) has a static insertion profile area that is defined by a pair of first curved portions (24) generated about a first radius (30) with a center that lies on the axis (14) and a pair of second curved portions (26) generated about a center that is spaced apart from the axis. The cutting structure (12) has a circular dynamic profile area generated upon rotation of the reamer (10) by a handle (40). Both the static insertion area and dynamic profile area lie transverse to the axis (14), the former being smaller than the latter. Several distinctive alignment structures (38) are described, alone and in combination with reamers (10) having a conventional hemispherical shell (15), as well as in combination with those present reamers (10) that are less invasive.

    • The coupling apparatus comprises a first tubular par (305) with a male member extending axially therefrom including a first mating interface surface (361) with a passageway extending from an axially open center of the first tubular part and opening onto the mating interface surface. The tool bit (350, 355) has an axial female bore for receiving the first part therewithin including a second mating interface (360) surface formed within the bore and shaped for receptive complemental facing with the first mating interface surface of the first part upon insertion of the first part into the receptacle, with a recess (370) being formed in the second mating interface surface and communicating with the passageway when the tool bit and the tubular part are engaged with the mating interface surfaces complementally facing one another. The tubular member has at least one axially elongated radially flexible tongue (336) to which the tool bit (350, 355) is secured and protruding through the passageway and into the recess to provide detenting attachment of the tool bit to the tubular member via superelastic radial bias of the tongue (336) induced by radially opposite deformation of the tongue upon passage thereof into the tubular part to reach the passageway.
