    • The present invention relates to a method of monitoring the operation of a cellular radio system in a system comprising at least a first base station and a repeater adapted to repeat signals sent by the first base station on traffic channels. In order for the management system to be able to detect malfunction more promptly and easily than before, the method comprises steps in which: the repeater is adapted to receive a traffic channel list sent by the base station, the traffic channels included in the traffic channel list are compared with the traffic channels used by the repeater, and an alarm is given if the traffic channels used by the repeater differ from the traffic channels included in the traffic channel list.

    • The invention relates to a base station for a digital time division multiple access (TDMA) radio network. The base station measures a time difference between the transmissions of a base station transceiver and a mobile radio station due to the distance between the base station and the mobile radio station. The mobile station is commanded to adjust its transmission relative to the transmission of the transceiver by a timing advance compensating for said time difference. The maximum value of the timing advance determines a maximum radius rMAX for an effective service area of the base station transceiver. In the invention, the timing of the reception of the transceiver is delayed relative to the transmission of the transceiver by a predetermined delay such that the maximum radius of the service area of the transceiver is r1 + rMAX, and the service area has a central area which has a radius r1 and within which the transceiver is not capable of providing services to mobile radio station, where r1 is directly proportional to said delay.

    • A capacity allocation method comprises receiving (303), in a network apparatus (101), a capacity request message regarding a user terminal (102). In response to receiving the capacity request message, the apparatus (101) checks (303) one or more service parameters related to the user terminal (102). If the checking (303) reveals that enhanced network service activation criteria are fulfilled, the service parameters are used to define (303), by using a suitable network algorithm, a temporarily enhanced network service for the user terminal (102) such that the temporarily enhanced network service exceeds the service level originally agreed for the user terminal (102).

    • The idea of this invention is to use at least two modems on the network management system side. At least one of these modems is used only for connections initialized by the network management system. At least one of the modem is used only for connections initialized by any or a group of network elements controlled by the network management system. The number of modems used for connections initiated by the management system may be more than one, thus enabling the network management system to initiate simultaneous connections to more than one network element. Likewise, more than one modem can be assigned for connections initiated by the network elements.

    • The basic idea of the invention is to exploit the mobile phone and the control apparatus controlling the phone already installed in the radio network. An example of such phones are the phones installed in the radio repeaters. According to the invention, the mobile phone of the radio repeater is used to both receive and make test calls. The controlling apparatus in the radio repeater is configured to make a test call to another repeater in response to having received a test call. These consecutive test calls form a test chain. A repeater can belong to a plurality of test chains. In this embodiment, the repeater belonging to a plurality of test chains is given a list of test phone numbers, i.e. a phone number of a radio repeater for every chain. The chains are distinguished by phone numbers or other identifiers of the preceding repeater in the chain.
