    • An acetabular cup prosthesis (86) has a cup body with correspondingly shaped inner concave and outer convex (87) surfaces. The cup body has an apex (98) as well as a base (91) that defines a plane (92). The cup body outer convex surface (87) has a portion (89) between the rim (103) and a distance about one third of the distance from the rim (103) to the apex (98), which portion (89) has an outer surface formed by first generating an arc (106) between the rim (103) and a transition point (90) about one third of the distance from the rim (103) to the apex (98), arc having a radius of curvature (101) whose origin (102) is near to, but not coincident with the center of the base (91), and then rotating the arc 360 degrees about a central axis (99) of the cup body, which axis runs between the apex (98) and the center of the base. In another embodiment, a plurality of cup bodies (86) are provided in a range of sizes between about 40 mm and 80 mm. Each cup body (86) has a companion rotary reamer (111) that is correspondingly shaped. The companion cup body (86) is oversized between about 1 mm and 3 mm relative to the companion rotary reamer (111), so that a generally constant change in volume is provided for all cup sizes between 40 mm and 80 mm.

    • A knee prosthesis includes a femoral prosthesis member (60) having anterior (12), distal (15), and posterior (13, 14) articulating surface portions. The articulating surface portions comprising a pair of condylar surface portions (13, 14, 61, 62) that are positioned at differing distances from the non-articulating surface plane. In one form the posterolateral articulating surface is a greater distance away from the anterior non-articulating surface than the posteromedial articulating surface (Figs. 1 and 15). The femoral prosthesis has a non-articulating surface that includes a plurality of intersecting surfaces including at least distal (23, 24), anterior (17, 18), and posterior (20, 21) surfaces for receiving the patient's distal femur after it has been surgically prepared. A tibial component (50) has concave articulating surfaces that receive the femoral component articulating surface portions during use. The angle of femoral rotation generally about the mechanical axis generally changes when going through a normal range of motion of the patient's knee while maintaining alignment of the femoral and tibial articular surfaces. The femoral prosthesis also has a proximal anterior region (65) that is concave (Fig. 19). An improved patella groove design is also shown (Figs. 20-24).

    • A modular intramedullary nail (10) includes three connectable sections (11, 12, 13) that are connectable end to end. The three sections include an upper proximal nail component (11), a central nail component (12), and a lower distal nail component (13). The nail components are connected using corresponding frustoconical socket (16) and frustoconical projecting end portions (19) of adjoining nail components that can be fitted together with a taper lock or morse taper connection and secured tightly together upon impact. Upon assembly, the connections are self-orienting, providing corresponding key and slot portions (23, 29) adjacent the respective frustoconical socket and frustoconical projecting end portions of the nail components. The interlocking keys and slot align and abut upon assembly so that the adjoining nail components only align in one relative position.

    • A distal femoral cutting instrument includes an intramedullary rod (19) for referencing the patient's intramedullary canal. A valgus block (12) with a flat reference surface mounts to the intramedullary rod (19) at a bore (17) of the valgus block. The bore (17) of the block (12) has a slant with respect to the flat reference surface (11) on the valgus block. The reference surface (11) defines a line that is normal to the mechanical axis of the patient while the bore (17) of the valgus block (12) tracks the patient's biomechanical axis. A distal femoral cutting block (35) removably attaches to the valgus block (12) and provides a flat cutting guide surface for shaping the patient's distal femur. The valgus block (12), intramedullary rod (19), and a stylus (23) (for connecting the valgus block and cutting together) are removed as a unit before shaping of the distal femur. An indexing system includes a gauge (53) having a series of openings corresponding to "anterior" referencing and to "posterior" referencing. During anterior referencing, the gauge (53) allows the surgeon to select the next smaller size prosthesis if the size falls in between available sizes. In posterior referencing, the gauge (53) allows the surgeon to select the next larger size prosthesis if the gauge measures a size that falls in between available sizes.
