    • A rocking mechanism, through which linear reciprocating movement of a piston in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine can be transferred, from the remote end of a con rod on which the piston is mounted to a crankshaft, includes an oscillating device and a mounting device by which the oscillating device is mountable on a crankcase of the engine for reversible oscillating movement of the oscillating device on a first axis parallel to the crankshaft axis. The oscillating device is adapted for pivotally connecting to the little end of a further con rod having a big end connectable to the crankshaft for relative rotation, between the rocking mechanism and the further con rod, on a second axis offset from and parallel to the first axis. The oscillating device also is adapted for pivotally connecting to the remote end of the con rod on which the piston is mounted for relative rotation, between the rocking mechanism and said remote end, on a third axis offset from and parallel to each of the first and second axes. The first and third axes are substantially equidistant from the second axis and the oscillating device is pivotally connectable to the respective con rods so that the first axis and the crankshaft axis are positioned to opposite sides of an axis on which the piston is reversibly reciprocable.

    • A double Cardan type of coupling, to achieve equal angular velocities, has first and second members rigidly connectable to an end of respective first and second shafts rotatable on first and second axes. The first member is pivotally coupled to a hub member, and a yoke with which the second member is pivotally coupled is disposed around and pivotally coupled to the hub. The first and second members are respectively pivotable relative to the hub and the yoke on mutually perpendicular third and fourth axes. The four axes intersect at a geometric centre for the coupling, with the third and fourth axes disposed in a first plane perpendicular to a second plane containing the first and second axes. A control linkage mechanism between the first and second members controls relative pivoting on the third and fourth axes to maintain the first plane as a bisector of an obtuse angle of inclination between the first and second axes, with variation of the obtuse angle of inclination.

    • A fluid control device of the sliding spool type having pilot control wherein a control profile (20) is located in a longitudinal bore through the spool (4) and has radial clearance (22) in said bore. The control profile (20) separates respective control chambers (12, 14) which extend to the main bore in which the spool is located and an orifice arrangement (5) in the wall of said spool (20) directs secondary fluid flow from a pressure port (10) onto said control profile and into said chambers (12, 14) whereby an imbalance in the chamber pressures will cause sliding movement of the spool. The control profile (20) is arranged on a rod which extends externally of the body of the device and sliding movement of the rod causes imbalance of a hydraulic Wheatstone bridge formed by the orifices (5, 6, 8) in combination with the control profile (20) whereby the bridge tends towards equilibrium causing the spool (4) to follow movement of said control profile (20) in a force feedback gain manner.
