    • An electrical stimulation device (10) and method for the treatment of dysphagia is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the electrical stimulation device (10) includes one or more channels of electrodes (18a, 18b, 2Oa5 20b) each of which includes a first electrode (18a, 20a) positioned in electrical contact with tissue of a target region of a patient and a second electrode (18b, 20b) positioned in electrical contact with tissue of a posterior neck region or a posterior thoracic region of the patient. A series of electrical pulses are then applied to the patient through the one or more channels of electrodes (18a, 18b, 20a, 20b) in accordance with a procedure for treating dysphagia. The series of electrical pulses may comprise: a plurality of cycles of a biphasic sequential pulse train pattern; a plurality of cycles of a biphasic overlapping pulse train pattern; a plurality of cycles of a triphasic sequential pulse train pattern; a plurality of cycles of a triphasic overlapping pulse train pattern; a functional pulse train pattern; a low-frequency pulse train pattern; or a frequency-sequenced pulse burst train pattern. Various exemplary embodiments of the invention are disclosed.

    • An electronic neuromuscular stimulation device (10) that is operated by a computerized electronic control unit (20). The unit (20) includes at least two and preferably four output channels to which are connected a corresponding set of electrode output cables (12). Each cable has attached a positive electrode (12D) and a negative electrode (12E) that are attached to selected areas of a patient's anatomy. The unit (20) also includes controls, indicators, and circuitry that produce nerve stimulation pulses that are applied to the patient through the electrodes (12D, 12E). The nerve stimulation pulses consist of individual pulses that are arranged into pulse trains and pulse train patterns. The pulse train patterns, whose selection depends on the type of ailment being treated, includes sequential patterns, delayed overlapping patterns, triple-phase overlapping patterns, reciprocal pulse trains, and delayed sequenced "sprint interval" patterns. The overlapping patterns are particularly timed to take advantage of neurological enhancement.

    • An electrical stimulation method for the reduction of joint compression is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the method utilizes an electrical stimulation device that includes a plurality of channels of electrodes each of which includes at least a first and second electrode positioned in electrical contact with tissue of at least two muscles crossing a joint. Agonist/antagonist muscles involved in abduction/adduction, flexion/extension, supination/pronation, protraction/retraction, and/or eversion/inversion of body regions via joint movement are stimulated with a patterned series of electrical pulses through channels of electrodes in accordance with a procedure for reducing joint compression. The patterned series of electrical pulses may comprise: a plurality of cycles of a biphasic sequential pulse train pattern; a plurality of cycles of a biphasic overlapping pulse train pattern; a plurality of cycles of a triphasic sequential pulse train pattern; and a plurality of cycles of a triphasic overlapping pulse train pattern.
