    • A method is described to determine the position of one or more snipers when a listening station is located in the target area, and when the snipers are randomly located. The intelligent listening system can be located at a stationary or a mobile platform, consisting of a minimum of 2 microphones in the combination with a compass. The listening station registers shot sound from the sniper weapon and the shock wave from the projectile trajectory. These two signals are utilised to determine the north adjusted direction to the weapon and the shock wave. The position of the weapon is determined when utilising the speed of the projectile and the time difference between the shot sound from the weapon and the shock wave. The position is determined as the distance along the direction vector from the listening station and to the sniper weapon. Additionally the closest distance to the trajectory of the projectile is determined. A corresponding requirement can be satisfied in an open battlefield or for general surveillance when the time and the position of gunfire is of interest. Such information can be communicated over telephone or radio.

    • The installation of a listening system is achieved without measuring the distances or the directions between the listening stations. These parameters are automatically calculated by utilising a method for automatic installation calibration. Approximate values for the relative positioning and direction can also be entered to support the calibration calculations. The invention is a method for the correct calibration of a passive acoustic listening system when such a listening system is used for the determination of the direction to or the positioning of the origin of sound signals. The calibration can be utilised for listening systems working in 2 or 3 geographical dimensions. The method is valid for the installation of a listening system consisting of at least 2 listening stations, together including at least 4 microphones. The relative distance between the listening stations and the relative direction to each listening station is calculated. The clock synchronising of each listening station is also determined. The complete calibration is performed by the repositioning of a sound generator to a series of geographical positions, unknown to the listening system. In each position, the sound generator transmits a characteristic sound.

    • The calibration of a listening system during operation is achieved with regard to a clock synchronising of the listening stations included in the listening system, and the receiver characteristics of the microphones located in each listening station. These parameters are automatically adjusted by utilising a method for automatic calibration, using one or more sound generators to transmit special correction signals. The geographic position of each sound generator included in the calibration must be known to the listening system, and be within hearing distance and line of sight of the microphones in the listening system. The invention is a method for the correct calibration of a passive acoustic listening system while such a listening system is used for the determination of the direction to, or the position of the origin of sound signals. The automatic clock synchronising of listening stations is important for accurate determination of the direction to and/or the position of the origin of distinct sound. Long term stability and the accuracy of the listening system is secured by the clock calibration and the adjustment of the microphone characteristics. Microphone characteristics from the microphone producers can support the corrections. The calibration can be utilised for listening systems working in 2 or 3 geographical dimensions, and can be performed either continuous or periodic.
