    • A shaft coupling includes a shaft (1) with a circumferential groove (2) near one end, a shaft receiving member (3) and a resiliently loaded shaft retention member (4) in the shaft receiving member (3). The shaft retention member (4) can be reciprocated in an elongate slot with or against the resilient bias so that upon insertion of the shaft in the shaft receiving member the shaft retention member (4) snaps into engagement with the groove (2) in the shaft (1). Any tendency to draw the shaft out of the shaft receiving member causes the shaft retention member to bed more firmly in the groove (2). In an alternative arrangement, the shaft retention member can be a torsion spring (9) fitted about a clamping bold (4), with one end (9A) of the spring engaging in the groove (2) of the shaft. The shaft (1) can be a vehicle steering column shaft and the shaft receiving member (3) can be a yoke of a universal joint.

Internal cone surfaces (10', 19') of bearing (12) contact a split cone (9) of assembly (6) and an external cone surface (19) of sleeve (18). The shaft may be part of a vehicle steering column with reach and rake adjustment.

    • In a snap connection system in which a shaft (16) is inserted into a tube (10) to a predetermined position, whereat co-operating surfaces on tube and shaft engage as in a laterally acting wedge, two axially spaced spring loaded balls (12) on one side of the tube urge the shaft into wedging engagement with the tube when in position. During insertion, a further spring loaded ball (13) on the opposite side of the tube adjacent the wedge apex urges the shaft out of wedging engagement with the tube. The balls are biassed by a spring sleeve (11), and a tang (14) thereof locates the sleeve on the tube. The tang may extend to the tube interior to coact with a detent in the shaft so that unclipping is necessary for disassembly. Alternatively, a spring loaded pin extending through sleeve and tube wall may accomplish the same end.
