    • A system and method are disclosed for avoiding nulls in a composite radiation pattern synthesized from a plurality of antenna beams. The disclosed invention teaches the use of delays in the signal paths associated with ones of the antenna beams utilized to synthesize the desired radiation pattern in order to avoid destructive combining of the signals. In a preferred embodiment, delays are introduced in each antenna beam signal having a common attribute such as a common phase center. Accordingly, a minimum number of phase differential boundaries are introduced in order that certain communications, such as CDMA, are not adversely affected. Adaptive arrays may be utilized to form radiation patterns, for which the azimuthal width and/or length of a sector may be adjusted by way of adjustments of the relative amplitude and phase of signal components of signals at antennas of a phased array adaptively controlled according to communication parameters such as information indicating the quality of the communication channel on that sector or the number of calls serviced in particular sectors.

    • The invention provides systems and methods for providing improved wireless data communication. Preferred embodiments of the present invention utilize multiple antenna beams in the forward link to provide increased forward link capacity and/or improved forward link signal quality. Multiple orthogonal sub-pilots are transmitted from a plurality of antenna elements for use in determining forward link channel characteristics according to a preferred embodiment. Forward link channel estimates may then be made by the preferred embodiment subscriber units and provided in a reverse link control channel to the corresponding base station. Multiple beams may also be utilized in the reverse link to provide increased reverse link capacity, such as for use in providing feedback of forward link channel estimates.

    • Systems and methods are disclosed for providing calibration of the phase relationships of signals simulcast from a transmission system. In a preferred embodiment, a calibration signal is introduced into the transmission system and provided to various antenna elements. Samples of the calibration signal are taken at a point very near the antenna elements so as to sample phase shifts introduced by the transmission system. The signals of sets of the antenna elements are combined after sampling for transmission down the antenna mast to the active circuitry of the present invention. Accordingly, the present invention operates to selectively energize antenna elements of the sets so as to provide a single calibration signal down the combined signal path. Through reference to sampled signals one at a time, the present invention determines a necessary phase adjustment to result in the desired phase relationship of the signals at the antenna elements.

    • The present invention provides systems and methods for coupling communication system components, such as an air-line bus and associated antenna elements, in a relatively easy to implement and inexpensive way resulting in improved signal attributes, such as reduced intermodulations and/or echos. According to the present invention an interface member is disposed between the communication system components to be interfaced to provide increased interface surface area. The increased surface area provided by the present invention provides disbursement of signal currents to reduce the occurrences of various spurious signals. Additionally, the increased surface area provided by the present invention allows for improved bonding of the interface member to one or more of the communication components. A preferred embodiment of the present invention is adapted to further increase the surface area through the use of surface extensions and/or particular surface shapes. Preferred embodiments of the present invention specifically adapt the components to be interfaced for use according to the present invention, such as to provide reliefs to accept the interface member and/or to provide structures to mitigate spurious signals associated with use of the interface member.
