    • A flash memory module includes an integral indicator light. The module alternatively includes a plurality electrical contacts which electrically interface to a host digital device. The module includes a plurality of flash memory cells. The cells are controlled by an integral controller. The indicator light is controlled by the controller. The indicator light indicates whether the flash memory module is being accessed. Alternatively, the indicator light indicates that the flash memory module should be replaced. A housing for the module is preferably light transmissive material, and preferably a transparent plastic. A proximal end of the module includes the electrical contacts and is inserted into the host. The indicator light is preferably a surface mount LED and is positioned adjacent the distal end of the flash memory module to be seen through the transparent plastic. Alternatively, the controller generates an electronic signal which is coupled to the host.

    • A flash memory module (100) includes an integral indicator light(110). The module alternatively includes a plurality electrical contacts which electrically interface to a host digital device. The module (100) includes a plurality of flash memory cells (102). The cells are controlled by an integral controller (108). The indicator light (110) is controlled by the controller (108). The indicator light (110) indicates whether the flash memory module (100) is being accessed. Alternatively, the indicator light (110) indicates that the flash memory module (100) should be replaced.     • An improved compact flash memory card system includes an improved compact flash memory card desktop adapter and an improved compact flash memory card. The improved compact flash memory card desktop adapter utilizes a fifty pin socket to interface with the compact flash memory card. The desktop adapter also utilizes a plug adapter to interface with a computer. For more efficient communication between the improved compact flash memory card and the computer, the improved desktop adapter adopts the universal serial bus architecture. The improved compact flash memory card utilizes a fifty pin connection to interface with a computer through an interface device. The fifty pin connection of the flash memory card can be used with different interface devices in a variety of configurations such as a universal serial bus mode, PCMCIA mode, and ATA IDE mode. Each of these modes of operation require different protocols. Upon initialization with an interface device, this improved compact flash memory card automatically detects which operation mode is used by this interface device and configures the memory card to be compatible with the present operation mode. Because all fifty pins of the flash memory card are occupied to either transfer data or provide control signals to and from the flash memory card, this improved flash memory card merely senses selected pins to determine the present mode of operation.

    • The present invention includes a digital system having a controller semiconductor device coupled to a host and a nonvolatile memory bank including a plurality of nonvolatile memory devices. The controller transfers information, organized in sectors, with each sector including a user data portion and an overhead portion, between the host and the nonvolatile memory bank and stores and reads two bytes of information relating to the same sector simultaneously within two nonvolatile memory devices. Each nonvolatile memory device is defined by a row of memory locations wherein corresponding rows of at least two semiconductor devices maintain two sectors of information therein with the overhead information relating to the two sectors maintained in one of the memory rows of the nonvolatile memory device. Each 32 sectors of information defines a block identified by a virtual physical block address with a block of information expanding between two memory devices wherein an even and an odd byte of a sector is simultaneously read from or written to two nonvolatile memory devices. In another embodiment, the controller stores an entire sector of information within a single nonvolatile memory device and reads from or writes to, a sector of information by processing corresponding bytes of at least two sectors in two nonvolatile memory devices simultaneously.
