The inflator provides a further flow of gas during the first phase of operation which has a predetermined duration, a second, greater flow of gas during a second phase of operation which has a predetermined duration and a third even greater flow of gas during a third phase of operation. The gas generator includes a first chamber (7) containing a relatively small pyrotechnic charge which is actuated initially, a second chamber (8) containing a small pyrotechnic charge which is actuated subsequently and a third, much larger chamber (15) containing a pyrotechnic charge which is actuated finally. Gas emerges from the gas generator through gas vent apertures (6).
