    • A sorting apparatus (1) has a first conveyor (2) with a plurality of cups (4) to receive products such as fruit (3). Moving substantially parallel with the first conveyor (2) is at least a second conveyor (5) having a plurality of discrete product holding compartments or pockets (6). The second conveyor (5) can move in the same or opposite direction to that of the first conveyor (2). The first conveyor (2) is operated so that products (3) are selectively discharged from the first conveyor (2) into respective compartments (6) until a required number of the products having a prescribed characteristic have been received and that pocket (6) can then be moved to the product transfer or emptying point. The characteristic of the product (3) can be for example type, weight, quantity, colour, shape, surface quality and/or density.

    • An article grading system for sorting objects, for example apples, into boxes containing apples of substantially the same size. The system optimises the packing process so that the value of the boxes packed from a given lot of apples is maximised. The system is provided with information relating to the price distribution of apples of various sizes and, using this as well as other information, decides at which box each individual apple should be off-loaded. The system works on-line wherein fruit are delivered to the system via a conveyor (7) on which are mounted a plurality of "cups", each of which may hold one apple. A local area network (15) of personal computers controls the operation of the system including accepting for input the weights or sizes of each individual piece of fruit via weighing or optical recognition stations and controlling the ejection of each individual piece of fruit at positions along the conveyor (7) corresponding to respective boxes being packed depending on the solution determined by the optimising algorithm which is also implemented on a personal computer linked to the local area network.

    • An article grading conveyor has a multi-stream singulating conveyor (4) carrying and advancing articles to be graded to a discharge zone (3). Articles from the discharge zone (3) are received onto a single stream grading conveyor (1). Optical scanning of the articles is undertaken by a scanner (15) scanning a zone (10) of the singulating conveyor (4), to determine a physical attribute of each article. Means are provided to associate the scanned attribute of each article from the singulating conveyor (4) with its subsequent position on the single stream grading conveyor (1). A multi-stream singulator having at least two streams of cup, at least one stream of cups being a partial cup in advance of the other streams so that the items are discharged non-simultaneously is also disclosed.
