    • A variable focus laser machining system (10) is disclosed. The machining system has a laser emitter (60) configured to emit a laser beam (65). Additionally, the machining system has a focusing element (75) configured to focus the laser beam. The machining system also has a controller (35). The controller is configured to focus the laser beam at a first focal point (Cp1). The first focal point is approximately positioned on a first machining surface (80) of a work piece (20). The controller is also configured to determine that the first machining surface has moved relative to the first focal point. Additionally, the controller is configured to re-focus the laser beam at a second focal point (φ2). The second focal point is positioned between a, second machining surface (85) and a predetermined surface (90) spaced apart from the second machining surface.
