    • Disclosed is a transformer driver circuit, which in one aspect comprises a transformer comprising a primary winding and a secondary winding and a transformer tap, the latter electrically connected to a first voltage source. The primary winding is electrically connected at both ends to respective unipolar controllable current sinks that form part of an integrated circuit. The circuit operates by each current sink selectively sinking current from the end of the primary winding to which it is connected so as to cause current to flow in the secondary winding in a push-pull fashion. The circuit further comprises a load electrically connected to the secondary winding; and protection circuitry operative to protect the integrated circuit from input levels greater than it can handle. In another aspect there is a similar transformer drive circuitry which may or may not be partly on an integrated circuit and have protection circuitry. This aspect comprises control circuitry that provides analogue control signals to the current sinks so as to cause them to sink current in a substantially linear dependence on the signal amplitude of said analogue control signals.

    • The invention discloses an electrical isolator circuit comprising: an input stage comprising a transmitter of an opto-isolator; and an output stage comprising: a receiver of the opto-isolator; an active circuit in series with the receiver between the receiver and a power rail of the output stage; a first resistor connected to an output of the active circuit, and an input for the application of a predetermined voltage to the active circuit, the output stage being configured such that a varying output voltage is developed across the first resistor in response to input of a high voltage AC signal to the input stage. Ideally the output stage is operable to clamp the voltage across the receiver at the level of the predetermined voltage, thereby allowing for an increase in the load resistor and variable output resistor without increasing the time constant to unacceptably having regards to switching requirements.

    • Disclosed is a network apparatus and associated method configured to form a network of operative devices using, in a main embodiment, powerlines as the network medium. The network medium provides for communication of data between operative devices. The network apparatus comprises plural network node apparatus, each of which comprise a network connector and an operative device connector. At least one of the network node apparatus also comprises a power saving apparatus which provides less power to operative parts of the network node apparatus itself and the operative device to which the network node apparatus is attached during a second operating condition than when in a first operating condition, thereby providing for reduced power consumption in the second operating condition. The network node apparatus also comprises a processor which determines at least one quality of service requirement and to change between the first and second conditions accordingly so as to enable routing of data in accordance with the quality of service requirement, while minimising power consumption of said network apparatus.
