    • A continuously variable transmission is disclosed comprising a transmission input and output between which a variator (V) can be coupled, in either a low regime or a high regime, by gearing (R1, R2, R3, M). The relationship between variator ratio and overall transmission ratio is different in the two regimes. Incorporated in the gearing are first and second clutch means (L, H) both hydraulically actuated, for engaging and disengaging low and high regimes respectively. The gearing provides a synchronous ratio at which a change between low and high regimes, at constant variator ratio, provides no change in the overall transmission ratio. The transmission is provided with hydraulics which incorporate a shift valve (110) which controls application of hydraulic pressures to the first and second clutch means. A change in state of the shift valve (110) causes one clutch means to change from engaged to disengaged and the other to make the opposite transition. In this way changes of transmission regime are hydraulically controlled.

    • An apparatus for controlling a variator having at least one roller between two torroidal disks may include at least one actuator responsive to fluid pressure at separate high side and low side fluid inlets thereof to control torque applied by the at least one roller to the disks. First and second variator switching valves may each receive a first fluid at a first pressure and a second fluid at a second lesser pressure. The first and second variator switching valves supply the first fluid to the high side fluid inlet and the second fluid to the low side fluid inlet during two of four different operational states together defined by the variator switching valves, and supply the second fluid to the high side fluid inlet and the first fluid to the low side fluid inlet during each of the remaining two of the four different operational states.

    • The invention concerns a traction control arrangement for a variator (10). The traction control arrangement has a traction control valve (119, 119a) which controls the traction load pressure and which is operable in at least two modes: 1) in a first mode, it receives (a) a first pilot pressure signal corresponding to the traction load pressure and (b) a second pilot pressure signal corresponding to the higher of the first and second reaction pressures, and controls the traction load pressure in response to the difference between the first and second pilot pressure signals; 2) in a second mode, it receives (a) a first pilot pressure signal corresponding to the traction load pressure, (b) a second pilot pressure signal corresponding to the higher of the first and second reaction pressures, and (c) a third pilot pressure signal corresponding to the lower of the first and second reaction pressures, and controls the traction load pressure as a function of the first, second and third pilot pressure signals. The relationship between traction load pressure and reaction force is different in the two modes and in this way provision is made to selectively alter the traction coefficient in the variator. According to a second aspect of the invention, a pre- stressed refiel spring acts in opposition to the traction load actuator.

    • The invention concerns an electronic controller for a continuously variable transmission of the type having a variator (10) with a rotary variator input (17) coupled to a first variator race (14a) and a rotary variator output (29) coupled to a second variator race (16a). At least one roller (20) runs upon the said races to transfer drive from one to the other. The roller is movable to steplessly vary the vaiϊator ratio. The variator further comprises at least one hydraulic actuator (36), (38) which acts upon the roller and through which net torque acting on the variator races is referred via the roller to the variator' s casing. A hydraulic arrangement is provided for applying to the actuator at least one hydraulic control pressure which determines force applied' by the actuator and thus determines the reaction torque. The varialtor is coupled between a rotary transmission input (17) and a rotary transmission output (714) such that the transmission ratio is a function of the variator ratio. The electronic controller is adapted to cany out the following steps in a loop: measure a speed ratio of the continuously variable transmission; compare the measured speed ratio with a target speed ratio; determine a transmission output torque request on the basis of the said comparison; convert the output torque request to a control pressure request, taking account of the speed ratio; differentiate the control pressure request with respect to lime to obtain a compensation value and apply the compensation value to the control pressure request; and output the resulting compensated control pressure reqxiest to the hydraulic valve arrangement.
