    • A photo-luminescence liquid crystal (LCD) display comprises: a display panel and a radiation source for generating excitation radiation for operating the display. The display panel comprises transparent front and back plates; a liquid crystal disposed between the front and back plates; a matrix of electrodes (array of thin film transistors TFTs) defining red, green and blue pixel areas of the display and operable to selectively induce an electric field across the liquid crystal in the pixel areas for controlling transmission of light through the pixel areas. A red phosphor material which emits red (R) light in response to excitation radiation is provided on the back plate corresponding to red pixel areas and green phosphor material which emits green light in response to excitation radiation is proved on the back plate corresponding to green pixel areas.

    • Novel orange phosphors are disclosed having the comprise silicate-based compounds having the formula (Sr,A1)x(Si,A2)(O,A3)2+x:Eu2+, where A1 is at least one divalent cation (a 2+ ion) including Mg, Ca, Ba, or Zn, or a combination of 1+ and 3+ cations; A2 is a 3+, 4+, or 5+ cation, including at least one of B, Al, Ga, C, Ge, P; A3 is a 1-, 2-, or 3- anion, including F, Cl, and Br; and x is any value between 2.5 and 3.5, inclusive. The formula is written to indicate that the A1 cation replaces Sr; the A2 cation replaces Si, and the A3 anion replaces O. These orange phosphors are configured to emit visible light having a peak emission wavelength greater than about 565 nm. They have applications in white LED illumination systems, plasma display panels, and in orange and other colored LED systems.

    • A method of generating an optical minimum shift keying (MSK) modulated signal, a method of pre-coding an input data stream for generation of an optical MSK modulated signal, a method of decoding an optical MSK modulated signal, an MSK transmitter, an encoder structure for encoding an input data stream for generation of an optical MSK modulated signal, and a receiver structure for decoding an optical MSK modulated signal. The method of generating an optical minimum shift keying (MSK) modulated signal comprises amplitude modulating a first optical signal utilising a clock signal having a clock frequency to generate a carrier suppressed return-to-zero (CS-RZ) second optical signal; splitting the second optical signal into a third and a fourth optical signals in a first arm and a second arm respectively; applying a substantially 1-bit time delay in the first arm and applying a phase shift in the second arm such that a phase difference between the first and second arms is π / 2 ; applying phase modulation in the first and second arms according to respective bit sequences; and combining the third and fourth signals from the first and second arms into the optical MSK modulated signal.
