    • An elastomeric drive line coupling is disclosed. The coupling includes an input drive shaft (12) having a longitudinal axis and terminating at one end with a housing (14) and an output drive shaft (20) having a longitudinal axis and terminating at one end with a ball (22). The housing (14) has a partially elliptical interior and the ball (22) has a partially elliptical exterior which is disposed within the housing (14). A partially elliptical rigid shell (26) is provided between the ball (22) and the housing (14). Both the ball (22) and the rigid shell (26) are bonded with elastomeric layers (32, 34) forming interleaved nested ellipses within the housing (14). These ellipses are oriented 90 DEG out of phase from one another. Torsional loads are applied to the output drive shaft (20) by the input drive shaft (12) through compression deformation of the elastomeric layers (32, 34) as the partially elliptical rigid shell (26) attempts to rotate relative to the housing (14) and the ball (22). Angular deflections of the output drive shaft (20) relative to the input drive shaft (12) are accommodated through shear deflections of the elastomeric layers (32, 34) as the partially spherical rigid shell (26) attempts to slide relative to the housing (14) and the ball (22).

    • A continous bend flexible/rigid riser system (10) is provided for coupling a subsea location (28) to an offshore platform or vessel (16). The riser system comprises a first rigid pipe section (28) coupled at its upper end to the platform. A plurality of intermediate pipe sections (30) are mutually coupled end to end, and are coupled in series with the first rigid pipe section by means of a plurality of flexible couplings (32). The lower end (26) of the last in the series of intermediate pipe sections is coupled to the subsea location (28). The flexible/rigid riser system reduces bending stresses transmitted along the riser by allowing angular displacement of the pipe sections with respect to one another.

    • A method and apparatus for erecting a vertical mast on a drill platform in the absence of a functioning drawworks. A guide section is first placed on the platform. The guide section has one vertical side for slidably receiving the mast top section, mast bottom section, and one or more mast intermediate sections, all of which, have approximately the same horizontal cross section. The bottom of top section is pivotally coupled to the top of intermediate section. Top section and intermediate section are then raised by a winch which is mounted on guide section until intermediate section is vertically disposed and slidably engaged by guide section. Top section and intermediate section are then rigidly coupled. The process is repeated until other intermediate sections, if any, and bottom section are vertically disposed on platform.

    • A fluid control circuit wherein said fluid is preferably a hydraulic fluid or other similar fluid, as appropriate to the application, having a variety of emergency control safety features. The fluid control system is particularly adapted for use with lifting devices, especially cranes, for loading and unloading items to or from a moving platform. The system as described is typical of that which may be used on a crane having both a main hoist and an auxiliary or whip hoist both of which are used for independent and differing load applications. The control circuit is capable of automatically setting all of the load bearing brakes (46, 47) upon an electrical or/and hydraulic power failure. In addition, the control circuit provides a means (20) for an operator to release the auxiliary or whip hoist, which is the smaller load bearing hoist, in an emergency situation where the line or hook on the auxiliary or whip hoist line becomes caught on a moving object. A valve (60) senses the load induced flow from the whip hoist motor (45) and controls the output of the hoist pump (57). When operating in an emergency mode, the main hoist motor (44) or whip hoist motor (45) operates as a pump to provide fluid to drive a motor (25a). The motor (25a) drives a pump (25b) which supplies fluid to the hoist motors to prevent cavitation.

    • A fully redundant drawworks is provided with two complete and totally independent systems for controlling and powering the drum (14) and drum shaft (16) of the drawworks (10). Each system broadly comprises at least one source of power (e.g., a motor or engine) (28, 30, 32, 34), a power transmission means (20, 22), preferably of the gear or chain type, and some means of mechanically coupling the power source (28, 30, 32, 34), transmission (20, 22) and drum shaft (16) together. Each system may also be provided with a brake means (24, 26), such as one or more disc, band, electric or water-cooled brakes. In the event that any component of either system fails, the fully redundant drawworks will still have the ability to raise drill pipe from a bore hole and thus avoid the risk of a "stuck" drill pipe.
