    • A method of stopping a winding machine that hoists and lowers an object prevents abrasion of an electromagnetic brake and a failure to hoist a load. Based on a speed instruction NREF generated by a speed instruction generating circuit NRC, a speed controller ASR outputs a torque instruction TREF to be inputted to an electric motor M and operates the winding machine. To stop the machine, after a brake instruction BR is outputted to an electromagnetic brake directly coupled to the electric motor M, the value of the torque instruction to the electric motor M is controlled to be zero for a predetermined length of time. When the electric motor speed NFB becomes zero, the control of the electric motor M is stopped.

    • A fully redundant drawworks is provided with two complete and totally independent systems for controlling and powering the drum (14) and drum shaft (16) of the drawworks (10). Each system broadly comprises at least one source of power (e.g., a motor or engine) (28, 30, 32, 34), a power transmission means (20, 22), preferably of the gear or chain type, and some means of mechanically coupling the power source (28, 30, 32, 34), transmission (20, 22) and drum shaft (16) together. Each system may also be provided with a brake means (24, 26), such as one or more disc, band, electric or water-cooled brakes. In the event that any component of either system fails, the fully redundant drawworks will still have the ability to raise drill pipe from a bore hole and thus avoid the risk of a "stuck" drill pipe.

    • Device for the prevention of reeling, especially in winches driven by vehicles, which winch is provided with a work cable reel rotating about a horizontal axis, the reeling operation of which is controlled by a control cable reel (6), which control cable reel is arranged for rotating together with the work cable reel in the inward reeling direction and thus for increasing the transmission capability of the means transmitting reeling power to the work cable reel, respectively for the reduction of the transmission capability of the power transmission means by preventing the inward reeling of the control cable. The device stops the inward reeling when the tilting of the winch or respectively of the vehicle carrying it exceeds a predetermined value relative to the vertical plane passing through the winch axis. For carrying out this operation the circumferential rim of the end flange of the winch control reel (6) is provided with toothing (5) and co-operating with locking elements mounted on the winch frame (8) construction on opposite sides relative the vertical plane passing through the control cable reel axis and swinging freely between a free position and a locking position, respectively, under the influence of gravitational force, whereby one locking element (1) is positioned on the upward side relative to the inward reeling direction of the control cable reel and correspondingly the other locking element on the opposite downward side.
