    • This invention is an apparatus for the treatment of a thrombotic occlusion (121) in a vessel of a patient comprising a flexible elongate tubular sheath (12) having proximal (13) and distal (14) extremities. A relatively large lumen (16) defined by a thin flexible wall extends from the proximal extremity (13) to the distal extremity (14) of the tubular sheath (12) so that the distal extremity is open. An occlusion disruption device (36) is slidably and rotatably disposed in the lumen (16) in the tubular sheath (12) and having proximal (38) and distal (39) extremities. The shaft has a guide wire lumen (41) extending from the proximal extremity (38) to the distal extremity (39). Disruption elements (47) are secured to the distal extremity (39) of the shaft (37) which when rotated disrupt the thrombotic occlusion (121) by causing it to break into pieces. Suction is applied to the lumen (16) in the tubular sheath (12) to aspirate pieces into the large lumen (16) of the tubular sheath to remove them from the vessel of the patient.

    • A microminiature piezoresistive pressure transducer (12) has first (RA) and second (RB) variable resistive elements. Circuitry (51) is coupled to the variable resistive elements of the transducer, and includes third (RF1) and fourth (RF2) fixed resistances of known values. The first (RA) and third (RF1) elements are coupled to an amplifier (61) and analog-to-digital converter (41), and the second (RB) and fourth (RF2) elements are coupled to a separate and independent amplifier (76) and analog-to-digital converter (42). Thus, the analog-to-digital converters (41, 42) have indepedent outputs with digitized voltages thereon, having a pressure component and a temperature component. A computer (46) coupled to the outputs of the analog-to-digital converters (41, 42) ascertains the unknown first (RA) and second (RB) variable resistances as independent variable resistance elements in solving a set of equations having these variable resistances elements as unknowns and pressure and temperature as the remaining unknowns to provide a temperature compensated pressure value as measured by the microminiature pressure transducer (12).

    • This invention is a guidewire (21) having pressure sensing capabilities for measuring pressure of a liquid in a vessel comprising a flexible elongate member (41) and having proximal (42) and distal (43) extremities, and having an outside diameter of 0.018'' or less. The distal extremity of said flexible elongate member (41) is adapted to be disposed in the liquid in said vessel. A housing (51) is carried by the flexible elongate member (41) and has a diameter substantially the same as the diameter of the flexible elongate member (41). The housing (51) has a space therein with a pressure sensor (76) mounted in the housing space in the housing. The pressure sensor (76) has a diaphragm (79) formed in a crystal (77) of semiconductor material, that is sensitive to changes in pressure of the liquid in the vessel. The diaphragm (79) is rectangular in shape and is mounted in a well (84), and is bordered by a rim (86) surrounding the well (84). A backing plate (78) is formed of an insulating material bonded to the crystal (77) and serves to reinforce the rim (86) of the crystal (77). The backing plate (78) has a cavity (101) therein underlying the diaphragm and is in substantial registration with the diaphragm (79). The cavity (101) serves as a pressure reference.
