    • A steel railroad sleeper (1) of inverted channel section whose open ends can selectively be closed by end plates (4) detachably connected one to each open end of the sleeper (1) and whose sides incline downwardly and outwardly from the upper rail supporting surface of the sleeper (1), the sleeper (1) being produced by cold forming strip steel. The sleeper (1) may be produced by cold pressing or cold rolling and the end plates (4) may also be produced by cold forming steel strip. In one embodiment the sleeper (1) has a waisted section (8) of reduced width. This waisted section (8) may be positioned generally midway along the length of the sleeper (1). The central section of the sleeper interior may be filled with a material to prevent the ingress of ballast to this central region.

    • An entry nozzle for transporting liquid metal from a tundish to a mould for the continuous casting of thin slab disposed therebelow, wherein the nozzle (1) has a hollow channel (7) therethrough, and at least at its lower outlet end, is, in plan section, of large aspect ratio of width to thickness, and is hollow substantially across its width, the entry nozzle being provided at positions at its lower outlet end arranged in operation to be submerged within the casting mould, with at least one exit port (8, 9, 10, 11) from the hollow channel disposed on each elongate side of the nozzle, and, with the nozzle in its operational disposition, so shaped as to direct metal into the mould from the nozzle transverse to its vertical disposition. With the process in its operating state the controlled effective liquid metal pressure head of the metal in the tundish provides a flow of such metal to the mould that, with the extraction rate of the solidifying metal from the metal forming means, creates a required level of metal within the mould.

    • A composite floor or ceiling structure which comprises a profiled steel deck supported by a plurality of I-section steel beams each having an upstanding web bordered by upper and lower flange plates and covered in situ with concrete. The deck comprises a plurality of side-by-side elongate profiled deck members each including an upper generally horizontal surface bordered by downwardly ant outwardly inclined side surfaces. The upper flange plate of each beam has formed in its upper surface a plurality of grooves in a pattern to increase bonding between the beam and its covering of concrete. Preferably, each supporting beam is rolled as a single piece with the width of its lower flange plate greater than that of its upper flange plate to define a supporting platform for the steel deck.

    • A process control method is described in which fluid is supplied to a plurality of fluid consumption units by a variable pressure supply, each consumption unit having associated therewith a flow control valve, the method including an initial step of determining the system resistance algorithm of each consumption unit with the control valve associated with that unit in a desired or designed maximum open position, and periodically measuring the fluid flows or fluid demand to consumption units (preferably each such units) calculating the instantaneous system resistance for each unit, selecting the highest such system resistance and modulating the output pressure of the fluid supply in dependants on that highest selected system resistance, and closing the control valves associated with the remaining consumption units to the extent necessary to provide the correct fluid flow supply for those units. By this method, excess pressure form the variable pressure supply is avoided leading to increased efficiency. A suitable application of the method is in the air supply for heaters of a reheat furnace in a steel mill.
