    • A thin blanket epitaxial layer of SiGe is grown on a silicon substrate to have a biaxial compressive stress in the growth plane. A thin epitaxial layer of silicon is deposited on the SiGe layer, with the SiGe layer having a thickness less than its critical thicknesses. Shallow trenches are subsequently fabricated through the epitaxial layers, so that the strain energy is redistributed such that the compressive strain in the SiGe layer is partially relaxed elastically and a degree of tensile strain is induced to the neighboring layers of silicon. Because this process for inducing tensile strain in a silicon over-layer is elastic in nature, the desired strain may be achieved without formation of misfit dislocations.

    • Position control for a read head with respect to a track on a storage disk is improved using a synchronization pattern that includes servo information as well as synchronization signals used to set a clock for recovering data from a disk. A disk stores data along substantially concentric tracks positioned at varying radii on the disk's data storage surface, with the data organized into data blocks. Synchronization patterns are provided at the start of each data block from which a read head can derive a synchronization signal useful for reading data from the data block. This synchronization signal is input to a phase locked oscillator to train a phase locked detector that recovers data signals stored in the data block. Servo information, suitable for identifying a misalignment between the read head and the track being read is also provided within the synchronization pattern. This may be accomplished by providing a conventional synchronization pattern modulated with a two dimensional servo pattern that includes information about the relative position of the read head with respect to a track. Conventional sector or wedge servo information for positioning the read head with respect to a track may be provided in addition to the servo data provided for each data storage block.

    • A servo control apparatus and method controls systems at least partially on the basis of an observable variable that has an absolute value functional relationship with the controlled variable and does not change sign for positive and negative variations from a nominal value. When applied to the positional control of an object, the control system observes a value of a position error signal and maps that signal to two different potentially correct displacement values. Two estimators within the control system are initiated, one using the positive displacement and the other using the negative displacement, and the two estimators each predict the future position of the object and the corresponding position error signal for each estimated position. A new position error signal is detected and compared to the two estimated position error signals. After sufficient system evolution, the control system can select one or the other of the estimators as being correct and the associated displacement is identified as correct and is used for future positioning applications, preferably until the sign of the displacement of the head again becomes ambiguous. The control system can be used in combination with other control mechanisms including those using complimentary control information that provides more complete positioning information. The control method, system and apparatus find particularly advantageous application in magnetic storage hard disk drive systems.

    • A CDMA radio system uses an adaptive filter in a receiver to mitigate multipath radio propagation and to filter out interfering signals. Characteristics of an initial stage of the filter preferably are determined by cross correlation of a generated pilot signal and the input signal with the integration of the correlation performed over a time period selected to be an integral number of symbol periods. The integration causes the portions of the cross correlation corresponding to the user subchannels to average substantially to zero, so that the pilot channel signal correlation is the primary contribution to the signal used to characterize the channel to establish the coefficients of the adaptive filter for the receiver.
