    • A system for estimating gas concentrations in a mixed atmosphere includes (a) a plurality of sensors for providing a set of measurements, at least one of the sensors sensitive to an internal concentration of hydrogen; and (b) a processor for receiving the set of measurements and for executing a sequential estimation filter that includes a plurality of states having a corresponding set of values. The processor responsively adjusts at least a portion of the set of values in response to the set of measurements. The plurality of sensors can include a resistive sensor and a capacitive gas sensor, both of which are sensitive to hydrogen concentration. The plurality of states can include states representative of hydrogen pressure in the mixed atmosphere, hydrogen concentration in a bulk material of at least one of the sensors, and hydrogen concentration in an interface layer of at least one of the sensors.

    • A protective coating sustains the long term performance of a solid-state hydrogen sensor that includes a catalyst layer for promoting the electrochemical dissociation of hydrogen. The catalyst is susceptible to deterioration in the presence of at least one contaminant, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, water and oxygen. The coating comprises at least one layer of silicon dioxide having a thickness that permits hydrogen to diffuse to the catalyst layer and that inhibits contaminant(s) from diffusing to the catalyst layer. The preferred coating further comprises at least one layer of a hydrophobic composition, preferably polytetrafluoroethylene, for inhibiting diffusion of water through the protective coating to the catalyst layer. The preferred protective coating further comprising at least one layer of alumina for inhibiting diffusion of oxygen through the protective coating to said catalyst layer. In manufacturing the protectively-coated sensor, the silicon dioxide layer is preferably annealed.

    • A method of reducing volatile organic compounds produced during a fermentation process includes (a) producing a volatile organic compound during a fermentation process, (b) generating C1O 2 gas, (c) dissolving the C1O 2 gas to form a C1O 2 solution, and (d) introducing an aqueous C1O 2 solution into said volatile organic compound wherein introducing said C1O 2 solution reduces concentration of said volatile organic compounds. Another method includes (a) producing a volatile organic compound during a fermentation process, and (b) introducing C1O 2 having an efficiency as C1O 2 of at least about 90% into the volatile organic compound wherein introducing said C1O 2 solution reduces concentration of said volatile organic compounds. An apparatus for treating volatile organic compounds produced during a fermentation process comprises a C1O 2 generator fluidly connected to a batch tank, fluidly connected to a volatile organic compound producing fermentation vessel.
