    • A filter cartridge (10) containing resin beads (140) for purifying fluids such as water and chemicals has a cylindrical housing (5) with an interior compartment containing a fixed septum (150) and a moveable piston-like septum (130). The resin beads are packed between the fixed septum and the moveable septum. The moveable septum is displaced upstream to account for expansion of the resin beads while the flow of the fluid through the filter cartridge causes the upstream septum to maintain a packing pressure on the resin beads. The downstream fixed septum will preferably have a cone-like shape.

    • A filter cartridge housing is disclosed that includes a first layer (62) and a second layer (64). The first layer is selected to be non-reactive with the fluid being filtered. Preferred materials for the first layer include pure polypropylene (PP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). "Pure" is intended to include the above materials without any pigments or fillers and any material which does not react adversely with the deionized water. The second layer, may contain pigment or colorant which is used to provide a light shield for the filter material and prevents the light from stimulating bacteria growth. Finally, a third layer may be provided which is gas impermeable. This prevents atmospheric air from reaching the filter media and prevents the deterioration of the media, such as ion exchange resin due to contact with carbon dioxide.

    • A method for monitoring the effectiveness of an ion exchange module in an ultrapure water purification circuit containing ultrapurified water and having a purified water inlet and a point of use outlet and a memory, the method comprising the steps of: (a) passing the water in the circuit through the ion exchange module a multiple of times to provide ultrapurified water; (b) measuring the resistivity of the ultrapurified water provided by step (a) using one or more sensors to provide an ultrapurified benchmark resistivity value R-i; (c) storing the value Ri in the memory; (d) introducing purified water into the circuit through the inlet; (e) passing the water in the circuit including the purified water of step (d) through the ion exchange module; (f) measuring the resistivity of the water after step (e) to provide a new water resistivity value RneW; and (g) comparing Ri and Rnew to determine the effectiveness of the ion exchange module. In this way, comparing the impact on the resistivity of newly introduced purified water after its first passage through the ion exchange module with the benchmark resistivity value Ri provides a better indicator of the effectiveness of the ion exchange module.
