    • A rotor blade sensor for detecting a rotor blade (430) comprising an electrical oscillator arranged to generate an oscillating signal. An antenna (300) includes a coil (100) having one or two winding layers coupled to the electrical oscillator. The antenna (300) may instead or as well include a coil (100) comprising a plurality of winding layers, each layer being separated by a spacer for substantially reducing inter-layer capacitance, being coupled to the electrical oscillator. The antenna (300) is driven in use by the oscillating signal of the oscillator at substantially a resonant frequency of the antenna (300). The antenna generates an antenna electromagnetic field that interacts with a rotor blade (430) such that the electrical characteristics of the antenna (300) vary as the interaction between the antenna (300) and the rotor blade changes and a detector circuit is arranged to monitor these electrical characteristics.

A first plurality of RF frequencies at which a receiver of the detection arrangement receives noise or interference signals in the absence of the operational electronic apparatus is identified. A second plurality of RF frequencies at which emissions from said operative electronic apparatus occur is identified. Each of a third plurality of RF frequencies is listened at, the third plurality of RF frequencies being determined on the basis of said second plurality of RF frequencies but excluding RF frequencies in said first plurality of RF frequencies. The operation of electronic apparatus is detected by reception of a predetermined signal on at least one RF frequency from said third plurality of RF frequencies.

    • A method for reducing the energy spread of ions over a specific and limited mass to charge ratio range is disclosed, along with an ion deceleration arrangement for implementing such a method. An electric field, having an electric field strength E is generated by a deceleration electrode arrangement (250). Ions of a specific and limited mass to charge ratio range, but having a spread of energies, are directed into the decelerating electric field generated by the deceleration electrode arrangement (250). The decelerating electric field is then removed, once substantially all of the ions of the specific mass to charge ratio range have entered the decelerating electric field. By matching the electric field strength E to the energy spread of the ions upon entry into the electric field, the energy spread of the said ions is reduced. Preferred embodiments of the invention employ energy dispersion upstream of the ion deceleration arrangement. For example, an ion mirror arrangement (200) may be used, the ions reflecting off an ion mirror (220) within that ion mirror arrangement (200) to promote energy defocusing.
